Police have arrested a woman on suspicion of drowning her twin 10-month old sons at a motel in California.
Heather Langdon, 37, is accused of killing the infants one day after police helped her find accommodation at the Virginia Motor Lodge Motel in Tulare. She was asked to leave the woman's shelter she was staying at after causing a disturbance.
Police said they had no previous contact with Langdon and would have called for a mental health assessment if they believed her two young children were in any danger, reports The Associated Press.
Officers were called to the motel at around 7:45 a.m. on December 6 following reports of two drowned children. When officers arrived, they found the twins and immediately started performing CPR. The babies were then taken to the Tulare Regional Medical Center, where they were later pronounced dead.
Police confirmed the motel does not have a pool and are gathering evidence as to how the children drowned.
"We don't know exactly [how] they got into the body of water," Tulare Police Sergeant Jon Hamlin told the Visalia Times-Delta.
The owner of the motel, Jay Bhakta, told the Visalia Times-Delta that police officers had dropped Langdon off with the twins on the of evening December 5. He said he did not charge the 37-year-old for the room because he wanted to help her.
"'In 26 years, this is the first time I've seen this," he added when describing seeing the babies being taken out of the room into an ambulance.
Victoria Conde, who has been staying at the motel on and off for around a year, said she tells her children to try and stay in the room when they are there.
"We tell our kids to stay inside," she said. "Just walking to the trash, there can be a lot of issues."
Langdon has been booked into Tulare County Pretrial Facility on suspicion of homicide. She is currently being held there without bail.
Police are asking that anyone with information about the incident contact police at 559-684-4290 or online at www.tipsubmit.com.
