California police officers have arrested a 48-year-old man after a waitress was fatally shot at a restaurant.

Officers from the Roseville Police Department (RPD) said they were alerted to the shooting at House of Oliver, on Douglas Boulevard, at around 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

When they arrived, officers found a woman who had suffered life-threatening injuries.

Roseville police said the suspect fled the restaurant shortly after the shooting but was quickly apprehended.

An RPD spokesperson later told Newsweek that the man arrested was Johnnie Jordan, 48. He has been charged with murder.

The spokesperson also confirmed that the woman had died from her injuries.

In a statement sent to Newsweek via email on Wednesday, the RPD added: "At this time, we're not confirming any details regarding if the victim and suspect were known to each other."

Matthew Oliver, the owner of House of Oliver, said the woman had worked at the restaurant for several years.

According to ABC10, Oliver said: "Due to senseless violence, we lost one of the most beautiful souls and colorful hearts."

He added: "A mother, a friend, a co-worker and truly someone who's part of our family and our heart is devastated."

In an update posted on Facebook on Monday, RPD said: "The sole suspect in this incident is in police custody. At this time, we're not releasing an identity but can confirm the sole person of interest is in custody. There's currently no threat to the community and the surrounding area of the incident is safe."

House of Oliver employee Trevor Christopher, 19, who was working at the restaurant at the time of the shooting, said he hid when the shots first rang out.

He told ABC10: "My first instinct was to get behind something, where nobody in the building I was just in could see me."

Christopher later praised the victim and said she had been a great person to work with over the past six months.

He continued: "She made it feel like we were just staying over, somewhere like we were comfortable."

Ashley Candler, who was pumping gas at a Safeway near House of Oliver on Douglas Boulevard, told Fox40: "All of a sudden there's 15 people running as fast as they could and they told us, 'Run as fast as you can.'"

Following the shooting, House of Oliver posted on Facebook: "Our heart is broken."

It added: "House of Oliver will be closed tomorrow. We will post when we will be reopening."

Newsweek has contacted House of Oliver for further comment.
