The series finale of How to Get Away with Murder Season 6 will air on ABC on May 14, and will bring the show to an end. This comes after it was announced in July 2019 that the show was ending.
This news coincidentally came the day after Netflix announced their first show from Shonda Rhimes, the producer of HTGAWM. This came after the Grey's Anatomy creator left ABC to sign a deal with the streamer.
However, it seems like the main reasons that the show is ending is due to its showrunner Pete Nowalk deciding the time was right to bring the show to a close.
"Deciding to end this series was a brutal decision, but ultimately the story tells you what to do—as it did here. For me, Annalise Keating's (played by Viola Davis) journey has always had a clear ending. Knowing I have 15 episodes left to finish her story, and the chance to give all the characters their own killer endings, is a gift rarely given to a series creator," Nowalk said in a statement.
He added in an interview with TV Guide: "What I'm just excited about is this show should have an ending. The storyline, any good mystery, you answer as many of the questions as you can—and I'm going to try to answer as many as I can."
However, when the cancelation was first announced, The Hollywood Reporter noted that the show was also the victim of dwindling ratings, with Seasons 4 and 5 has double-digital declines in their viewer figures. However, the show is still a solid ratings performer, with the article also reporting that the show has strong delayed viewing figures, with many choosing to watch episodes after they air.
It might also be notable that Season 6 saw the cast all reach the end of their six-year contracts to do the show (according to THR). As such, it may have felt like a good time to end the show, as Season 7 and beyond would see the show become more expensive to produce, with many of the cast likely to negotiate pay rises to continue on the show.
As for what fans can expect from the final episode, Nowalk told MEAWW: "You can assume anything from death to prison, escape, or more. Every character's going to have a different ending; some that they choose, and some that they don't."
With How to Get Away with Murder ending, Rhimes has only two dramas left on ABC, with Grey's Anatomy and Station 19 still airing on the network.
