The latest episode of How to Get Away with Murder (Season 6, Episode 9) was full of drama, but the most shocking part of the episode was when Asher Millstone (played by Matt McGorry) died after we saw him bleeding out in his apartment building. Viewers saw Oliver Hampton (Conrad Ricamora) hit him in the head, but what actually killed the character is currently unknown, adding another mystery to a season of HTGAWM packed full of intrigue.

The episode saw Michaela Pratt (Aja Naomi King) and Connor Walsh (Jack Falahee) arrested for Asher's death, but it remains uncertain whether they actually committed the crime—they deny all involvement but, as we have learned across the last five seasons of the ABC show, that means almost nothing.

If fans find themselves hoping that this is a fake death after the shock return of Wes Gibbins (Alfred Enoch), then actor Matt McGorry has some bad news for you. He told TVLine: "Asher is really dead... He's really, actually dead."

However, the former Orange is the New Black actor will appear again on the show. McGorry said he is likely to return in flashback so viewers can learn more about why Asher decided to betray his friends and turn informer in order to help his family.

McGorry told TVGuide: "There's definitely more to tell about Asher. We just went back to filming after a little two-week break from filming after filming the midseason finale. So I've been back and working on Episode 10 in flashbacks the way that we do on the show very often, filling in different points in the storylines from the missing pieces to provide more and more context."

"How to Get Away with Murder" Season 6 saw Asher Millstone (played by Matt McGorry) die ABC

Asked what Asher's death means for the upcoming series finale of How to Get Away with Murder, airing on ABC in the spring, the actor said: "I think it will likely impact them pretty greatly. They've relied on each other in many ways for whatever semblance of emotional support they could offer one another, but also just to hold together the fabric of lies, basically... over their time at law school. I think the stakes, in general, are rising. The water level is climbing and people can feel that it's getting to a point where there's no turning back."

Showrunner Pete Nowalk said of Asher's death to TVLine: "He started on the outside of the group—loyal to his family, first and foremost—and that's how he ultimately died... Asher's a family man at heart, it's one of the best qualities about him. And we all definitely felt like he'd choose his blood family over Annalise. Of course, we'll get more insight into his decision when we return."

Speaking to People, McGorry said to expect the unexpected now that is character is out of the picture and therefore no longer a suspect in the upcoming death of Annalise Keating (Viola Davis). He said: "There's no predicting what is going to happen in this show. Oftentimes, you get lots of either Easter eggs or red herrings, so I would say, I think you should probably take things exactly how you want to take them. Whatever allows you to enjoy the show the most, I encourage that experience and interpretation."

How to Get Away with Murder Season 6 returns on April 2 on ABC.
