How to Watch Biden State of the Union: Time, Live Stream for SOTU Address

President Joe Biden will deliver his first State of the Union address on Tuesday as Americans face rising prices at the gas pump and worry about the potential for another war as Russia continues to attack Ukraine.

Biden will use the State of the Union (SOTU) speech to highlight his administration's accomplishments and pave the path forward for his next two years in office. The speech comes as Biden struggles with low approval numbers and a Congress that has been unable to pass a key campaign initiative, the Build Back Better act.

The State of the Union address is one of the biggest speeches of the year for the president and it will be broadcast on most, if not all, news stations. Biden is expected to begin speaking at 9 p.m. ET. C-Span's coverage of the speech will begin at 8 p.m. and can be streamed online and on television.

The White House will also have a live stream of Biden's address on its YouTube channel.

Presidents use the State of the Union address to focus attention on all their administration has done thus far, while subtly touching on the challenges the country faces. It may be tough for Biden to outright ignore America's poor economy amid months-long inflation, but he's likely to peg it to his plans for a brighter future to instill hope in voters ahead of the midterms.

According to the White House, Biden plans to call on Congress to pass his legislative agenda for clean energy and climate action. He wants to enact "critical investments" and tax credits for domestic clean energy manufacturing and deployment. The White House said it will cut energy costs for Americans by an average of $500 per year. It will also create good-paying jobs, according to the White House.

A major accomplishment Biden will tout during the speech is the passage of the American Rescue Plan, a $1.9 trillion relief package. Passed in March 2021, it delivered $1,400 payments to many Americans and extended Child Tax Credits through the end of the year. Experts credited the direct payments for cutting child poverty by a significant amount and reducing food insecurity.

Democrats and Republicans also signed onto Biden's infrastructure package, which the White House championed as being much-needed legislation for minority communities. It's possible Biden will also highlight his nomination of the first Black woman to the Supreme Court.

The State of the Union address focuses predominantly on domestic issues, but Russia's invasion of Ukraine is sure to be a cloud hanging over the speech. President's have addressed foreign threats to the country, though, and it's hard to imagine that Biden will completely ignore the issue, especially since it may impact Americans.

In sanctioning Russia, Biden acknowledged that oil prices may rise and Americans will bear the burden. However, he noted that freedom comes at a cost and said he will do everything in his power to limit the impact of the sanctions on the American public.

Democrats hope Biden's speech will provide an inspiring message to voters ahead of the midterms. The president's party historically loses seats in the midterm elections and Republicans only need to flip a few seats to retake control of Congress.
