The internet has come to the defense of a man who explained getting a grocery store employee fired after he harassed the man's wife while shopping.
Posted to Reddit's infamous "AmITheA**hole" forum, u/Fortress-3575 said he and his wife were grocery shopping when he noticed one of the employees following them. He grew suspicious when the employee began persuading his wife to purchase different products. His post has received over 10,900 upvotes in just 13 hours after it was published.
According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), 81 percent of women have encountered a form of sexual assault, harassment, or violence.
Thinking it was over once they left the store, the man found a piece of paper with a phone number on his wife's windshield. His wife said to discard the note and forget it happened. He did the opposite.
"I took the note, walked inside the supermarket and started dialing the number," he wrote. "I wait few seconds and a phone starts ringing. I look near the register and see my guy standing there with a puzzled look on his face looking at his phone."
The man angrily confronted the college-aged employee about the paper on the windshield. The employee, taken aback, told him he didn't do it. The Redditor's argument grabbed the attention of many customers so he requested to talk to the manager.
"The manager comes in minutes later and I tell him everything. he apologetically agrees it was inappropriate and unprofessional and borderline harassment," he said. "He then tells the guy to go to the back and then tells me he'll take care of it then further apologizes to my wife."
A while later, the man found out that the employee had been let go, causing an argument between u/Fortress-3575 and his wife.
"My wife said I caused a huge issue for no reason and there was no harm in letting that guy just keep his job," he wrote. "I said she was being unreasonable to think I made him lose his job. She said no but I could've tossed the note instead of making a scene and causing this college student (how did she know?) to lose his income when it's a frequent think for guys that age to act like that."
He concluded his post by stating that he felt guilty for getting the worker fired.
The Reddit community took the man's side in the comment section.
A popular comment by u/AnnyTray received 14,300 upvotes. "NTA. That was not borderline harassment that WAS harassment and that employee had what was coming. Also, I strongly suspect that this must've been the last straw for him getting fired," they said.
u/DanDan_notaman defended the Redditor. "He played a stupid game and won a stupid prize. While I never want anyone to lose their job, it was inappropriate for this person to leave their phone number on the car."
"NTA. The employee's behavior was inappropriate while in the store, and crossed the line when he left his number on your car," u/bamf1701 added. "You had no way of knowing if this was some kid being dumb or if this is stalking behavior that was going to escalate."
