The internet has been left shocked by a mother's apparent refusal to tell her son that his dad wasn't actually his biological father.
In a viral post shared on U.K.-based discussion website Mumsnet, which can be seen here, user SistersRdoingit4themselves explained that her dad died in May and that his death exposed a family secret—her younger brother had a different father.
The Mumsnet user added that her younger brother recently found his birth certificate and noticed that his dad's name wasn't on it.
She continued: "He asked mom and instead of telling him the truth, she lied to him. My brother is nearly 30. He's not stupid."

"He knows something isn't right but no one is telling him I've spoken to mom time and time again to tell him.
"She says she will but she doesn't. She carries on like nothing has happened. She just says 'when the time comes' For me the time came and went years ago and she should have been honest with him."
The Mumsnet user added that her brother became concerned and is actively seeking to find out the truth via a DNA test.
According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Review, more than 25 million people have added their DNA to four leading commercial ancestry and health databases.
She continued: "It now looks like my brother will have to do a DNA test with dad's last remaining relative (who also knows by the way) which is going to cost him over £1,000 ($1,186) and then go to court to have dad's name put on his birth certificate.
"Mom still says nothing. What do I do? In my head, I've given her two weeks after I spoke to her about it yesterday and if she doesn't say anything I will tell him.
"I'm so angry at all the adults at the time who were supposed to tell him and they didn't. It would seem mom is happy for him to go to court and have a DNA [test] rather than tell him."
She finally explained why her dad was left off her brother's birth certificate: "Mom's answer for the birth certificate was she did out of spite as her and my dad were divorcing at the time."
Unsurprisingly, the woman's post generated a lot of interest and it has attracted 202 comments since it was shared on Wednesday, July 13.
Sharing the Truth
Many of those who commented said the woman should share the truth with several others berating the mother for failing to be honest with her son.
One Mumsnet user said: "YANBU (you are not being unreasonable). I'm so sorry for your loss.
"The ramifications of not telling him are huge now and I can't believe your mom is going to let him pay to have DNA tests to have his heart broken.
"I'm sure she's terrified of his reaction but it's gone past that now. He will never forgive any of you for lying and withholding the truth, what a massive betrayal. Your brother will be so angry that everyone knows the truth about this except him."
Another added: "What an absolutely vile person she is. And to continue this knowing how much it affects your DB (dear brother). Disgusting woman. Tell him and I would go LC (low contact) with her."
A third posted: "Tell him. He has [a] right to know. Your DM (dear mother) has no right to withhold the truth."
