Ivanka Trump and Kim Kardashian: A Timeline of Their Friendship

They've both grown up surrounded by wealth and fame, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that Kim Kardashian and Ivanka Trump have formed a friendship over the years.

While Kardashian notoriously worked with Donald Trump during his presidency, the two women have been in each other's orbit as socialites for much longer than that.

The duo shocked the internet when Ivanka was recently spotted at Kardashian's 43rd birthday, however the pair have been photographed together on numerous occasions before this.

Newsweek reached out to representatives for Kardashian and Ivanka via email Thursday.

Ivanka Trump and Kim Kardashian's Friendship Timeline

May 2014

The Skims CEO and daughter of the former president formed their unlikely friendship at the 2014 Met Gala, where they reportedly bonded over motherhood and their "mutual passion" for criminal justice reform.

"Kim and Ivanka have been friends for years and have hung out on a number of occasions," a source exclusively told Us Weekly. "They initially bonded nearly a decade ago at the Met Gala over motherhood and being new moms. But they continued to connect numerous times over the years."

May 2018

In the years following, Kardashian met with Donald Trump at the White House on numerous occasions. In May 2018 the reality star successfully petitioned Trump to commute the life sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, a nonviolent drug offender.

"I hated how I felt when I went into the White House for the first time and I didn't know half of anything that they were saying—like all of the clemency talk, and all the attorney lingo and everything that they were talking about," she said on the Angie Martinez IRL Podcast. "I literally was sitting there, like texting my attorney that was next to me."

The meet-up had been facilitated by Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner, who, in his memoir Breaking History, wrote that Kardashian reached out to the president via Ivanka. After Kardashian's meeting with Donald Trump, The Cut reported she was later spotted at Ivanka's house, having dinner with her and her husband.

June 2018

On June 6, Donald Trump commuted Johnson's life sentence after the first-time drug offender served 21 years in prison for attempted possession of cocaine, conspiracy to possess cocaine, and money laundering.

September 2018

In the same year, Kardashian participated in a listening session on clemency and prison reform headed by the president's senior adviser and son-in-law Kushner. Afterward, Kardashian posed for a photo with Ivanka Trump and Kushner, as well as author and CNN commentator Van Jones and Leonard Leo of the Federalist Society.

"Great working session today at the White House on ways to improve the clemency process with policy leaders and criminal justice reform advocates," Ivanka Trump wrote alongside the photo on Twitter, which Kardashian retweeted.

January 2019

Kardashian expressed her gratitude to Donald Trump for signing the First Step Act, which enabled Matthew Charles, who had spent 21 years behind bars, to be freed from prison. The law reduced mandatory minimum sentences in certain cases. It also expanded the ability for prisoners to earn shorter sentences through good behavior.

The American media personality posted a thank you message to Donald Trump on X, formerly known as Twitter, crediting the accomplishment to "true bipartisanship."

June 2019

Kardashian visited the White House again, this time to announce the latest in her criminal justice reform agenda—a partnership with Lyft to hand out gift cards to reformed criminals, to help them get to and from job interviews.

During her visit, Kardashian, Ivanka Trump, and Kushner were photographed together as they listened to Donald Trump speak about second-chance hiring and criminal justice reform.

March 2020

The reality star shared news about Donald Trump reducing the prison sentences of three incarcerated women.

"President Trump commuted the sentences of three really deserving women. I didn't hear much about it in the news, so I wanted to share with you their stories!" she posted on X.

"I have the pleasure of spending the day with these women today along with Alice Marie Johnson, who helped to pick these women."

October 2022

Kardashian and Ivanka Trump may be on different sides of the fame game, but they both know how to capitalize on their reputations. The duo was spotted getting dinner together after Kardashian's ex, Kanye West, went on an anti-Semitic rant online.

The pair had an intimate three-hour dinner on October 23, at the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles.

October 2023

While this has all been simmering in the background, it wasn't until Kardashian's birthday celebrations on October 20 this year that the two revealed just how close they are. Ivanka Trump was photographed posing with Kardashian and Lauren Sanchez, the fiancée of Jeff Bezos, in a photo that Kardashian and Ivanka Trump both shared on social media.

"So blessed to have hit the jackpot of friends!" Kardashian wrote under a carousel of photos she shared on Instagram, which included Ivanka Trump.

Ivanka Trump reshared the photos, adding: "Loved celebrating you! HBD Kim ❤️✨."

She also shared a photo of herself laughing as she held a cutout of Kardashian's face to her Instagram story. "Enjoying some FaceTime 👯‍♀️👯‍♀️ on your special day @kimkardashian," she wrote.
