James Comer Under Increasing Pressure Over Loans to his Brother

James Comer has been criticized by Democrats after reports emerged he gave his brother a $200,000 personal loan, despite criticizing President Joe Biden for doing the same thing.

The Kentucky Republican representative chairs the House Oversight Committee impeachment probe into Biden, which opened after Republicans alleged they had evidence of the president's knowledge of and role in his family members' domestic and foreign business dealings while he served as vice president under Barack Obama.

Their latest focus is on revealed bank records that show Biden loaned his brother $200,000 in 2018. Comer alleges the loan repayment is proof of the president profiting from illicit international business.

The White House accused Republicans of "abusing their power to conduct a smear campaign" and Newsweek contacted a representative for Biden by email to comment on this story.

But the Daily Beast reported on Thursday that Comer had previously loaned money to a family member,

Citing Kentucky property records, the publication reported that Comer and his brother have engaged in land swaps related to their family farming business and that one loan was for $200,000 and involved a shell company.

Following the reports, Democrats were quick to point out the irony of the situation.

On Wednesday, Comer signed subpoenas for the president's son Hunter Biden, brother James Biden and their business partner Rob Walker, posting a video of him doing so on X, formerly Twitter.

Congressman Jared Moskowitz mocked Comer by recreating the video.

Meanwhile, Congressman Eric Swalwell called on Comer to subpoena himself, dubbing the loan "highly suspicious."

Mary Trump, the former president's estranged niece, called the news "fantastic."

GOP members on the House Oversight Committee have been investigating the Biden family for over 10 months, but are yet to uncover evidence of Biden being directly involved with his son's business dealings.

In a statement on Wednesday, the House Oversight Committee said it had obtained financial records that showed Biden family members allegedly set up more than 20 shell companies during Biden's vice presidency in order to hide payments they received from overseas.

The committee further charged that the Biden family, its associates, and its companies had received more than $24 million from foreign nations, including some viewed as U.S. adversaries.

In a statement on Wednesday, White House spokesman Ian Sams wrote: "With just over a week to go until House Republicans may again thrust the country into a harmful and chaotic government shutdown, the most extreme voices in their party like James Comer are trying to distract from their repeated failures to govern."

"Instead of using the power of Congress to pursue a partisan political smear campaign against the President and his family, extreme House Republicans should do their jobs."
