What Is 'Jeen-Yuhs' About?

Over 20 years ago, comedian, TV presenter, and filmmaker Clarence "Coodie" Simmons Jr. crossed paths with up-and-coming Chicago producer and rapper known at the time as Kanye West.

For the next two decades, Coodie worked with West, documenting his almost every move. Alongside his filmmaking partner, Chike Ozah, they would go on to create some of West's iconic music videos including "Through the Wire" and "Jesus Walks."

As a result of their friendship and West's blessing to let them film over two decades, there are several hours of unseen archival footage that will now be available for the world to see in the three-part documentary, Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy.

Along the way, fans of the Grammy-winning rapper will see the struggles West faced in the early days of his music career in order to be taken seriously, including Roc-A-Fella Records' secretaries declining to hear "All Falls Down" and "Jesus Walks," two of West's most successful, and arguably legendary hits.

Jeen-Yuhs also explores his loving relationship with his mother Donda West who died in November 2007.

The documentary will also focus on the later 2010s and West's decision to launch his hugely successful fashion line, Yeezus. His marriage to Kim Kardashian will also be addressed alongside its breakdown.

His controversial run for presidency and support for former President Donald Trump will also play out on screen.

Audiences will also see some famous faces pop up in the documentary, including Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Common and Mos Def.

There are also wholesome scenes of West hanging out with Kid Cudi. Together, they would go on to release a collaborative album Kids See Ghosts. These scenes are sure to be bittersweet after West's recent outburst online where he announced Cudi would not be featuring on Donda 2 due to his friendship with Kim Kardashian's partner, Pete Davidson.

On a lined piece of paper that he uploaded to Instagram, West wrote in a now-deleted post: "Just so everyone knows Cudi will not be on Donda because he's friends with you know who ... We all speak in Billie [Eilish] language now."

Cudi replied: "Too bad I don't wanna be on ur album u f****** in dinosaur hahaha. Everyone knows I've been the best thing about ur albums since I met u. Ima pray for u brother."

Speaking to Netflix, Jeen-Yuhs director Chike Ozah shared his hopes for the documentary.

He said: "We would love for people to see on a deeper level that it's not so much about Kanye. It's not about a person or individual. It's about using Coodie and Kanye as vessels to tell an empowering story about how if you put your mind toward your passions and have faith in God, you can achieve anything. It doesn't come without hard work; it doesn't come without adversities; it doesn't come without strains in friendship. But if you keep pushing through for years, you will eventually succeed.

"The generation right below us don't really even know Coodie and Kanye's relationship. So the majority of viewers are just going to know Kanye now, and they're not even going to know Kanye's journey or understand how he got there. Kanye's a billionaire, but when we first start this film, Kanye's not a billionaire by any means. So even just seeing that growth. It's definitely empowering. It's going to be eye-opening."

Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy is streaming on Netflix now, with new episodes arriving on Wednesdays.
