Former Jeopardy! champ Amy Schneider has shared details of her engagement to Genevieve Davis.
Schneider, who lives in Oakland, California, revealed last week that she was to marry Davis, with whom she had been friends before they started dating in February 2021.
In an interview with ABC affiliate KGO-TV, which was broadcast on Wednesday, Schneider said she had been expecting a proposal from her partner at some point last month—but wasn't sure of when it would happen.
"I knew she was going to propose some time in February," Schneider said. "There is Valentine's Day then and it's actually our anniversary of when we started dating and I thought it might be one of those days."
As it turned out, Davis still managed to surprise Schneider with her proposal, which took place in the presence of close friends.
Schneider said: "[Davis] had just suggested to some friends of ours, 'Hey, want to come hang out on Tuesday? Just like have a happy hour at our place?' I was like, 'I've got a lot going on.' I didn't really think anything of it.
"I had gone into the other room for a little bit. I came out and she was on one knee. Her friends had brought balloons that they had hidden and one of them was filming it. It completely shocked me in the moment. And I said yes!"
"I'm really excited about [the wedding]," the former software engineering manager said. "I've always been somebody that in my relationships, whether romantic or just personal, I'm pretty much all in or nothing. So, marriage was always a part of my plans."
Announcing her news on Twitter last week, Schneider shared a photo of her and Davis' rings, adding the caption: "Genevieve is no longer my girlfriend... she's my fiancée!!! I couldn't be happier or more proud to spend my life with the very best person in the entire world."
The same image was shared on Schneider's Instagram account, where she added that the two women had actually proposed to each other.
"She said yes!" Schneider wrote. "Well, actually I said yes, but then I wanted to propose too, so she said yes as well lol.
"I couldn't be happier or more proud to be marrying the very best person in the entire world, and I'm so glad to be sharing my life with her. It's great to be able to introduce her to people as 'Genevieve, my fiancée.'"
Back in December, when Schneider was weeks into her record-breaking Jeopardy! run, she explained that she and Davis had been friends first.
She wrote on Twitter: "In the summer of 2020, my friend was hanging out at my apartment, talking on the phone to her boyfriend, and somehow or other she wound up inviting her boyfriend's sister over to my place, to give her a ride somewhere. That sister turned out to be Genevieve."
"Now, I'd never really believed in 'love at first sight,'" she continued, "and maybe I'm just retroactively projecting my feelings back onto that encounter, but I swear I knew when she walked in the door that she was going to be in my life for a long time.
"For various reasons, we didn't actually start dating until February 2021, but that time as friends was really valuable, and we both think we have a long future together. Finally, in March, we completed our family when we adopted a cat, Meep."
Schneider has become something of a Jeopardy! superstar since making her debut in November, thanks to a 40-game win streak that has placed her second only to all-time champion Ken Jennings (who won 74 games). She is only the fourth contestant to pass the $1 million mark in regular-season play, earning $1,382,800.
The University of Dayton alum, whose winning streak ended on January 26, is expected to return to the Jeopardy! fold this fall to compete in the Tournament of Champions.
