Joe Biden's Approval Rating Needs a 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' Boost

President Joe Biden may be hoping for a poll boost following an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday night, amid low approval ratings and five months out from crucial midterm elections.

Biden will participate in his first in-studio late night interview since becoming president in January last year as Americans' disapproval of the job he's doing outpaces approval.

Poll tracker FiveThirtyEight analyzes Biden's approval rating based on a wide variety of polls and its own system of pollster ratings. They found that approval of the president stood at just 40.8 percent as of Tuesday, while disapproval was 53.9 percent.

Those figures come as the U.S. continues to suffer inflation at a near 40-year high and the average price for a gallon of gas has reached several new records in recent weeks.

Democrats may also be on course for defeat in the upcoming midterm elections, where Republicans are hoping to retake the House of Representatives, the Senate or both.

FiveThirtyEight's generic congressional ballot found that 45 percent of Americans support Republicans in the midterms as of Tuesday, while 42.8 percent back Democrats.

Jimmy Kimmel tweeted about Biden's appearance on his ABC show on Sunday, and seemed to joke about unfounded claims about 2020 election fraud made by former President Donald Trump and some of his supporters.

"Our very elected President @JoeBiden visits @JimmyKimmelLive Wednesday night. No malarkey," Kimmel wrote.

Biden's interview with Kimmel may give the president the opportunity to address some of the issues facing the country in a relatively friendly venue, but it remains to be seen how it might affect his poll numbers.

The president appeared on NBC's The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon for a virtual interview on December 10, 2021. FiveThirtyEight's analysis showed Biden's approval on that day was 43 percent compared to disapproval of 50.7 percent.

One week later, Biden's approval was up to 43.9 percent and disapproval had fallen to 50.5 percent. Those figures have worsened for Biden in the six months since his interview with Fallon.

Some Fox News hosts criticized the fact Biden will be interviewed by Kimmel, suggesting he will go easy on the president.

Fox Business anchor Dagen McDowell said it was indicative of the "land of insanity in which we all live." Kimmel responded to those criticisms by taking aim at Fox News' own coverage.

"Oh, I see, what I do is insane," Kimmel said. "You guys telling us we should arm P.E. teachers to protect kids, that makes sense."

Kimmel added: "President on a late-night talk show? Insane. Got it."
