Katy Perry got a rise out of football fans last night as she debuted her new music video during the College Football Playoff National Championship game.
Anyone watching Alabama take on Georgia on Monday, January 10 will have had their game interrupted by the sight of Perry and Swedish DJ Alesso as the video of their new song "When I'm Gone" aired for the first time at halftime on ESPN. The inclusion of Perry brought back memories of the famous halftime performance from her at the 2015 Super Bowl XLIX when she rode in on a giant lion while an enthusiastic dancing shark broke the internet.
The latest music video features futuristic themes with rocket ships, a mechanical dog, robotic dance moves and plenty of product placement.
While Perry's fans were thrilled, football fans also voiced their opinions on the performance across Twitter.
Perry had warned fans that she'd be interrupting the college football game prior to kickoff by tweeting the announcement.
Get yer wings? cause I’ve got yer W.I.G.‼️The music video with @Alesso premieres at halftime of the #cfbplayoff ?? tune in to @espn starting at 5:00pm PT @ESPNCFB okuuuur ? pic.twitter.com/hw7jM56F0N

When the music video eventually aired, many fans, and even some sports journalists tweeted their confusion at the decision to air Katy Perry's new song at halftime.
Journalist Mike Ferguson wryly pointed out "Nothing says national championship football game like a 4-minute Katy Perry video at halftime..." — though the video is actually less than three minutes long. The Athletic writer Steve Berman also chose sarcasm saying that seeing Katy Perry dance with a robot dog in a heavily sponsored music video is "totally normal college football halftime."
Nothing says national championship football game like a 4-minute Katy Perry video at halftime…

Just watching Katy Perry dance with a robot dog in a heavily sponsored music video, totally normal college football halftime.

Sports radio commentator Mike Conti went one step further and criticized whoever decided to premiere a Katy Perry music video during halftime and called for them to be fired.
This is not hyperbole. Whoever decided to show that Katy Perry video instead of the marching bands or otherwise informative halftime content should be fired.

Nothing adds to the pageantry of college football halftime quite like a pre-recorded Katy Perry video.

However, when halftime rolled around, it had generally been an uneventful game with Alabama leading Georgia 9-6, all field goals. Since it wasn't the most entertaining of encounters, viewers and Perry fans were thankful she turned up to liven up their evenings.
This game stinks. I hate both these teams. Give us more of Katy Perry plz.

While her appearance was appreciated by some, many others saw it as an opportunity to reminisce about 2015 when Perry performed at the Super Bowl halftime show. Some fans like @mynameiskatycat celebrated Perry by comparing screenshots of the old and new performances.

TV meteorologist Tyler Roney brought everyone's minds back to that classic performance when a man in a shark costume stole the show by dancing out of sync with everyone else.
This was the best Katy Perry halftime performance. #NationalChampionship pic.twitter.com/WyszBDiKu6

The Ringer journalist Rodger Sherman went one better by suggesting that Super Bowl performance was the superior half time performance, but also that Perry was also part of a better college football moment. He included a screenshot of the time she taunted LSU fans on ESPN by tossing a corndog across the studio, backing Auburn on the day of their game.
that was neither the best Katy Perry football halftime show nor the best Katy Perry college football moment pic.twitter.com/9UN3ibWtxj
