Kherson Under Russian Bombardment Since Zelensky Visit, Residents Say

Two Kherson residents and one international aid worker have confirmed to Newsweek that the city has come under intense Russian bombardment starting from mid-afternoon on Monday, November 14. The strikes have hit residential buildings, industrial concerns and transportation infrastructure.

Due at least in part to severely limited internet connections in the city, visual evidence of the strikes is scarce. Journalists are only permitted to enter Kherson region as part of excursions organized by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, which has requested that strike locations not be made public until after officials have publicly released information about any Russian attacks. In the case of Kherson, no such public announcements have been made.

Still, the evidence that Russian attacks are occurring has begun to trickle out.

"Explosions have been heard 24/7," one resident wrote to Newsweek Wednesday evening via a messenger application after catching an internet connection.

On Friday morning, the resident connected once again in order to convey that "a rocket just hit the city, and there is a fire."

A Telegram channel posted a photograph of the aftermath of the strike. It matched the location that the resident's messages to Newsweek went on to cite.

It is still unknown precisely how many Russian strikes have hit the city in the past week, how much damage they have caused, and if there have been injuries or deaths as a result.

In the days before it withdrew its forces from Kherson city on Friday, November 11, Russia rendered inoperable the local civilian infrastructure that provided for electricity, water and telecommunications. Even with the city back under Ukrainian control, it remains unclear when such services will be restored.
