Hilarious kiss cam footage captured at a Vancouver Canucks hockey game last week has gone viral, and its "interesting" twist has sparked an online debate.
The footage was posted to TikTok on Friday by ahgahoeee and has already amassed more than 10.8 million views and over 1.4 million likes. But despite being entertained by the video, some commenters have accused the viral kiss cam moment of being "staged"—a phenomenon that is allegedly very common.
Throughout the video, various couples smile for the camera and smooch for the crowd. But things take a dramatic turn when the kiss cam pans to two "strangers," who are separated by an empty seat.
"No," the woman mouths as the man laughs.
Despite her reluctance, however, the camera operator refuses to move on to a new couple.
"It doesn't matter if you don't know each other," said the announcer. "Come on, let's go."
The woman looks over to the man and after a brief conversation, they share a kiss.
After a few moments, the kiss cam lands on a man returning to his seat, which happens to be the aforementioned empty seat separating the two "strangers." Once he sits down, he puts his arm around the woman, who's presumably his girlfriend, while the other man begins nervously chugging his beer.
"It's going to be an interesting ride home," the announcer commented as the audience laughed. The boyfriend, meanwhile, looks confused.
"This can't [be] real," read the post's top comment with over 35,000 likes.
"Not real but always funny," ggdude replied.
"How do people not realize stuff like this is set up?" asked zfrench.
According to entertainment news site UPROXX, many viral kiss cam moments throughout the years have been staged.
"In fact, it happens all the time at stadiums across the country, with PR teams doing their best to give their fans a good laugh through staged Kiss Cam skits," the website claimed.
For example, a viral kiss cam moment from a 2015 Celtics-Bulls game reportedly showed one woman being swept away by Benny the Bull after being ignored by her boyfriend, HuffPost reported. It was later confirmed by Bulls Manager of Corporate Communications Beth Esler, however, that the moment was staged to "help rally fans and keep them engaged in the game," said the publication.
Though many have pointed out that the kiss cam moment captured in ahgahoeee's video was likely fake, many have chosen to believe that it was real.
"I believe it! The guy won't even look their way afterward. She was totally embarrassed," said J Rod.
"Bro it happened at a live hockey game, how would they have set it up?" asked Dart.
One TikTok user wrote: "Staged or not, my mouth dropped."
In unrelated scoreboard news, a man used the jumbotron scoreboard to break up with his girlfriend at a baseball game last summer.
"Alyssa, this relationship is OVER," read the man, Tim's, fan shout-out.
And in December, a video that showed a Utah Jazz dancer getting proposed to during the game's halftime performance went viral.
