Sadly, the story of The Last Kingdom and Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon) on Netflix is almost over. The gripping historical series came to a dramatic end with a fifth and final outing this month on Netflix after almost two years of waiting. There is one spin-off film to come, titled Seven Kings Must Die, an adaptation of the final three books in Bernard Cornwell's The Saxon Stories novel series titled War of the Wolf, Sword of Kings, and War Lord.
Sadly, not all of the show's characters will return for the spin-off but regardless, many members of the cast have been paying tribute to the show in a series of Instagram posts. Newsweek has everything you need to know about their touching tributes.
Alexander Dreymon aka Uhtred of Bebbanburg
The Last Kingdom lead star, Dreymon, has been posting a series of behind-the-scenes images of his time on The Last Kingdom as well as some behind-the-scene snaps of his time filming Seven Kings Must Die.
On Monday, March 21 when filming on Seven Kings Must Die wrapped in Budapest, Hungary, Dreymon posted a lengthy tribute to his time on The Last Kingdom, telling fans on Instagram he was "exhausted and overwhelmed with gratitude."
He penned: "That's a wrap on @thelastkingdom, on Seven Kings Must Die, and on Uhtred, son of Uhtred. As you can tell, I'm slightly out of it, exhausted and overwhelmed. Overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone who has gotten us to this point...our cast and crew, @carnivalfilms & @nbcuniversal, and, of course, all of you. Thank you @netflix for allowing us to travel all the way to Bebbanburg and beyond.
"I feel so lucky that I got to live part-time in Uhtred's skin for so many years. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all."
Millie Brady aka Aethelflaed
On the day of The Last Kingdom's release, Millie Brady, who plays Aethelflaed, took to Instagram to share some behind-the-scenes images of her and the cast of The Last Kingdom.
Alongside the series of images, Brady penned: "Ain't no better bunch than this lovely bunch. @thelastkingdom final season is out today. I love these people with all my heart and it's been the greatest gift being in this show. #destinyisall."
Sadly, it is very unlikely Brady will make an appearance in Seven Kings Die after her character died of illness in the final season. On the other hand, there is the possibility she could appear in the spin-off movie in the form of a flashback.
James Northcote aka Aldhelm
James Northcote who played the role of Aldhelm has been sharing a lot of images of his time on The Last Kingdom.
In particular, he paid tribute to his wife and the crew of The Last Kingdom and the families of the cast and crew for their support ahead of the show's premiere.
He wrote: "Had a great time last week doing the @thelastkingdom story takeover to share some behind-the-scenes photographs. Thank you to everyone who came out. This photo is by my tireless teammate's wife @libbyjhopper who followed me to Budapest last season to work on the show with me so we didn't have to spend 8 months apart.
"First huge thanks to the production for supporting us. Second when you watch Season 5 on Wednesday don't forget the family and friends who have supported the cast, crew, and creatives in making the show. Behind us is a group of friends and family bigger than the biggest shield wall you've ever seen. 2 days to go #thelastkingdom #season5 #thelastseason."
Eliza Butterworth aka Queen Aelswith of Wessex
Eliza Butterworth, who has starred in all five seasons of The Last Kingdom, not only reflected on her time on the show and paid tribute to the cast, she particularly praised her co-star Dreymon, describing him as "our warrior, our legend, our Lord Uhtred"
Alongside a series of images of Dreymon and the cast, Butterworth wrote: "Thank you to every single person that has been involved in the making of this show since 2014! The hard work, talent, genius, and loveliness from all of our crew, production, and cast have made this show so very special. And a huuuuge thank you to the insanely phenomenal @alexander.dreymon for being our warrior, our legend, our Lord Uhtred. You blow us all away!!!! Your talents know no bounds! We were so honoured to have even been directed by you in Episode 2 of this final season. Such a special moment—we are in awe of you and everything you have done!! What an increeeedible journey this has been! I love you TLK family! You know what I'm gonna say now.........destiny is all."
Hopefully, this isn't the last fans have seen of Butterworth, considering her character was one of the few to survive in the final series.
At the end of The Last Kingdom Season 5, Aelswith was planning on moving to Bebbanburg along with Eadith (Stefanie Martini).
Mark Rowley aka Finan
Mark Rowley, who plays Finan, Uhtred's sidekick, was also one of the many actors from The Last Kingdom to pay tribute to his fellow castmates and time on the show.
Most recently, he shared a video and some images of himself on what would have been his last day on the set of The Last Kingdom Season 5.
Alongside the post, he wrote: "MY LAST DAY ON SET PLAYING FINAN...
"6+ years playing this Irish warrior has been an absolute joy. Thanks, TLK for the wonderful memories, the lifelong friendships, and some of the most hilarious moments I have experienced so far in this journey called life.
@thelastkingdom @thelastkingdom.tlktv @netflix #thelastkingdom - huge shout out to my brothers on and off-screen (Team Uhtred) @alexander.dreymon @arnasfederman @samuelsson_magnus @cavanclerkin @harrygilby and Ewan Mitchell. Destiny is all..."
The Last Kingdom is streaming on Netflix now.
