Lauren Boebert Gets Warning Sign Out of Colorado

Colorado voters are sending a warning sign to Representative Lauren Boebert, who is running for reelection in the state's 3rd Congressional district.

Half of voters in Boebert's home state think that MAGA policies are dangerous for Colorado, compared to 41 percent of voters who say the same of Democratic Socialist policies, according to a November poll conducted by the nonpartisan Colorado Polling Institute (CPI).

The figures could be troubling for Boebert, a MAGA darling facing a difficult reelection bid next year.

Although her district has long been a Republican stronghold, her narrow victory of 546 votes in last year's 2022 midterms suggested that things were changing in Colorado's largest congressional district. No one expected her race to be that competitive, yet Democrat Adam Frisch pulled off a stronger-than-expected performance, turning the contest into the closest House race in the nation.

Newsweek reached out to Boebert's campaign via email for comment.

Boebert emerged as a MAGA star in 2020 while winning the Republican nomination against five-term incumbent Scott Tipton in an upset.

Throughout her campaign, she made headlines for protesting Colorado's COVID restrictions, expressing sympathy for QAnon conspiracy theories and vowing to carry a gun to the Capitol if she was elected.

On Capitol Hill, she has been seen as one of former President Donald Trump's staunchest allies and is among the most conservative Republicans in Congress.

Her political opponents have attacked her for her MAGA ties, and she has downplayed her Freedom Caucus stardom while campaigning at home. Recent reports following her on the campaign trail have described Boebert as portraying "a different version of herself in the Capitol than she does back home."

But while Colorado voters believe Democratic Socialist policies to be less dangerous than MAGA ones, fewer believe that socialist ideas would move the country in the right direction.

Only 18 percent of voters said they think Democratic Socialist policies would move Colorado in the right direction, compared to 26 percent who believe the same of MAGA policies. MAGA policies had broader support among Republicans, of whom 55 percent said the they moved the state in the right direction, compared to Democratic Socialist policies, which only 37 percent of Democrats said moved the state in the right direction.

More voters said that Democratic Socialist ideas were misguided but not dangerous, 22 percent, compared to those that said the same of MAGA ideas, 13 percent.

Although Colorado seemed divided on MAGA and Democratic Socialist policies, voters had similar sentiments toward the Republican Party and the Democratic Party, with 30 percent supporting the former and 35 percent the latter. The poll also showed President Joe Biden with a 13-percentage-point lead over Trump in a hypothetical 2024 matchup and a 10-point advantage for Democrats on a generic congressional ballot.

The CPI survey was conducted between November 26 and 27 among a sample of 652 voters in Colorado. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.83 percentage points.
