What Is Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty About?

According to HBO Max, the Murdaughs enjoyed a "powerful influence" over the legal system in South Carolina's Lowcountry region but everything changed when they became plagued by accusations of fraud, deception, and murder.

HBO Max stated that hailing from a long line of powerful legal figures, Alex Murdaugh along with his wife, Maggie, and sons, Buster and Paul, enjoyed "unparalleled sway over authorities until Paul's involvement in a tragic boating accident thrust a level of scrutiny on the family's actions and legacy, revealing a bizarre and deadly chain of events."

"Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty questions the unchecked power of privilege—and the trail of death and destruction left in one family's wake," the streaming site added.

In June 2021, Alex Murdaugh, a respected and powerful attorney in Hampton County, called the police and told them that he had arrived home to discover his wife, Maggie, 52, and son, Paul, 22, dead.

They had been shot to death with two different firearms. In July 2022, the South Carolina Attorney General's Office said that Alex Murdaugh was indicted on "two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in the deaths of his wife Maggie and his son Paul."

At the time of his death, Paul Murdaugh was set to go on trial for a charge of boating under the influence, after allegedly causing a fatal crash that killed his friend, 19-year-old Mallory Beach, in February 2019.

In December 2021, before he was indicted in the murder of his wife and son, Alex Murdaugh was facing dozens of other possible charges, including an alleged attempt to have himself shot and killed so that his son could collect insurance money. These accusations led to the indefinite suspension of his law license.

Ross Dinerstein, the executive producer of the show and CEO of Campfire Studios, said of the new documentary series about the Murdaughs: "This case has captivated the country for over a year, and it would be quite an understatement to say, 'there's much more to the story.' In this series, we were able to offer new perspectives, new details, and much-needed context to these infamous, both alleged and proven, accidents and crimes."

Where Is Alex Murdaugh Now?

Alex Murdaugh is currently in jail awaiting trial, which is scheduled for January 2023.

As well as the murder charges, he faces nearly 50 counts of breach of trust with fraudulent intent, computer crimes, money laundering, and forgery. If convicted of all charges, he could be sentenced to hundreds of years in prison.

The former lawyer is accused of running seven schemes between 2016 and 2020 to cheat his clients out of portions of their settlement money. According to court documents, he would do so by telling clients that their settlements were smaller than expected or that they had to pay additional fees for services like accident reconstruction.

Prosecutors said that Alex Murdaugh would send the extra portions of the settlement money to a fake account. According to the indictments, he stole about $1.4 million as part of these schemes.

Alex Murdaugh has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges against him. Additionally, he has said that some of his problems stem from a 20-year-long opiate addiction.
