A hilarious video that shows a man digging through the garbage to find gifts that he thinks he "accidentally threw away" has gone viral.

The video was posted to TikTok on December 5 by the man's wife, Brinlee Miles (@brinleemiles). The post has since racked up more than 1.2 million views and over 71,000 likes.

"My husband accidentally threw away a bag of Christmas presents that I left on the counter," said the video's narrator.

In the video, Miles' husband can be seen digging through a dumpster while fully dressed in a collared shirt, dress pants and tie.

About halfway through the video, Miles said that her husband "looked FOREVER," but couldn't find the bag. At the end of the video, she revealed why that was.

"I just found it in the closet," read the text overlay in the video's final frame. "I forgot I put it there."

In the post's caption, Miles wrote: "Babe, if you're seeing this, I owe you one."

Christmas shopping has proved to be difficult for many Americans this year.

A new poll conducted by the Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research revealed that four in 10 of the study's participants say that it's harder to afford Christmas gifts this year due to inflation, Newsweek previously reported.

The increased costs of essentials such as food, energy and housing are putting low-income families in a bind this holiday season, as they have to decide whether or not they can afford to buy their children gifts.

"It's stressful," said 33-year-old mother Emarilis Velazquez. "You want to give it all to your kids, even though (Christmas) is about family. They still expect things. It is hard that you can't give them what they ask for."

Of course, supply-chain issues have also affected this year's holiday shopping. As a result, secondhand gifts are "booming."

"Gifting at its core should be about thoughtfulness, and arguably more thought is put into finding a meaningful, interesting secondhand gift for someone than just hitting the 'buy' button on something everyone is getting from Amazon," said sustainability expert Ashlee Piper via Newsweek.

Commenters thought Miles' video was funny but some recommended that she retroactively plant the presents near the dumpster to make it look like her husband just missed them.

"Put it outside when he's not looking then go get it and tell him he must [have] missed it," wrote Lauren.

Danielle added: So you're gunna [sic] have to go put it in the trash and act like you found it and he's blind lol."

"I would have let him go inside and snuck out there with the bag and pretend I found it myself," said Crissy J.

Others suggested that she just pretend to go back to the store.

"Just tell him that it's alright you'll just go back to the store," commented Bliss.

Another TikToker said: "tell him you re-bought the gifts."
