A driver in New York State struck and killed a pedestrian who stayed on the vehicle's windshield for 2 miles, police have said.

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) said the victim, an Amazon contractor, had been assisting an employee whose vehicle had been hit close to a driveway on Dysinger Road in Lockport at about 6:34 p.m. on Saturday, according to CBS affiliate WIVB.

According to the network, the impact caused the victim to land on top of the vehicle and windshield and the driver did not stop for 2.4 miles.

In a Sunday Facebook post, Niagara County Sheriff Michael Filicetti said: "The vehicle left the scene of the accident and the injured male was later located in the area of Bowmiller Road and Akron Road.

"He was transported to Eastern Niagara Hospital Lockport where he succumbed to his injuries.

"An investigation by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Bureau and the Accident Investigation Team led to the discovery of the 2018 BMW X5 that was involved in the accident."

Police later identified the victim as Rafael A. Medina-Gonzalez, 28, from Grand Island in New York State's Erie County.

Nathan Marziale, 38, of Lockport, was arrested and charged with one count of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, a class D felony.

He was later transported to the Niagara County Jail where he is being held pending his arraignment in court.

Newsweek has contacted the Niagara County Sheriff's Office for comment.

According to legal firm Tilem and Associates, PC, leaving the scene of an accident in New York State can result in a punishment of one year in jail.

The firm added: "Leaving the scene involving serious physical injury or death can result in felony charges carrying a maximum sentence of up to seven years."

In October 2021, a woman turned herself in to authorities after two mothers were killed in a hit-and-run incident in Detroit, Michigan.

The double hit-and-run killed both Erica Yancey, 38, a mother of four and her sister-in-law Brittany Jones, a mom-of-three in her 20s.

They had been leaving the Kings and Queens Banquet Hall on the 15000 block of Schaefer when they were struck by a dark-colored Kia Soul.

The driver did not stop after hitting both women, who were on foot at the time. Both mothers later died of their injuries.

A Detroit Police Department spokesperson told Newsweek there was no known connection between the woman in custody and the victims.
