A man went viral on Reddit after going to adopt a cat at the shelter and coming back with two of them because they were a "bonded pair".

In a post shared on the subreddit r/cats on Thursday, his sister-in-law, who goes by the username u/JMyers666, shared a picture of the two kittens, with a caption that read: "My [brother in law] went to adopt a cat. He came home with two cats because the shelter said they're a 'bonded pair'."

In the picture the two gray cats with white paws and spots on their fur can be seen laying down on top of each other, comfortably getting used to the new place.

According to statistics by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.2 million are cats.

Each year about 4.1 million shelter animals are adopted, including 2 million dogs and 2.1 million cats. About 810,000 animals who enter shelters as strays are returned to their owners. Of those, 710,000 are dogs and 100,000 are cats.

The post has so far reached over 32,100 upvotes and 587 comments, and most users praised the man for not splitting the two kittens. One user said: "Yay! Bonded pairs are the best, they bring so much joy! They often get split up and some cats are very traumatized by it. [brother in law] must be a good dude!"

Another user commented: "A fair excuse for bringing home 17 cats hahaha." And Hauntedgooselover joked: "Yeah, you gotta take all 17. They're a bonded gang!"

A third said: "This is how my husband and I ended up with 3 cats. We knew we wanted one, knew we ought to get two so they had a companion, went to the shelter and there was a litter of three 12-week-old kittens that had been found and fostered together. Decided on the spot to take all 3. It's been a blast."

Another user commented: "Seems like they are literally bonded!" And clouddevourer added: "Yeah, I thought Bonded? With superglue?" While Flaky-Fish6922 joked: "siamese twin-cats?"

While one joked: "There's a special place in heaven for those who actually adopt a pair instead of saying they only went for one your [brother in law] has a special heart and I'm happy he didn't split up the Siamese twins"
