Commenters praised a man who said he kicked his fiancée out of their own engagement party because of a comment she made to his older sister about her past sex work.
The anonymous man, known as u/Chemical-Dot765, posted about the incident in Reddit's popular "Am I The A**hole" forum where it received more than 13,000 upvotes and 2,400 comments. The post can be found here.
Sex Work in America
According to Human Rights Watch, more than half of Americans and two-thirds of voters ages 18 to 44 years old support decriminalizing sex work.
The sex industry generates more than $14 billion per year within the United States, although millions of sex workers face daily social stigmatization as well as possible violence and legal involvement.
Research conducted by HRW found that sex workers facing arrests or police abuse are less likely to report crimes committed against them or the trafficking of others, "ultimately making them more unsafe."
'AITA?'
In the post titled "AITA For telling my fiance to leave our own engagement party after she insulted my sister for once being a prostitute and a high school dropout" the 34-year-old man said his parents passed away in a car accident when he was 14.
"My sister (39F) Kate was nineteen, so she was given custody of me and our little sister," the post read. "To prevent us from becoming homeless and being thrown in foster care, Kate left school and worked as a prostitute."
He said Kate did sex work and worked a cashier job to pay for their food and rent but was able to get her GED, become a certified hair stylist, and open her own beauty salon.
"But Kate admits her time as a prostitute was the darkest point in her life and me and our little sister have never forgotten the sacrifice Kate made for us," the post read.

The Party
The man said he and his 32-year-old fiancée Lilly were recently celebrating with friends and family at their engagement party when the incident occurred.
During a conversation at the party, Kate talked about how she and her husband were planning a vacation but decided not to go and save for a few years to focus their money on repairs for her salon.
The man told Kate he agreed it was better to wait, but Lilly "sneered" at her and said "if you want extra money, you can always quit the salon and go back to being a whore for a living. Not like anywhere else can trust a high school dropout with a job."
'Heartless and Cruel'
The man said Kate began crying and her husband led her away while he told Lilly to leave immediately.
"I didn't care where she went. Just leave so I didn't have to look at her," the post read. "Lilly argued but I snapped at her to get out of my sight until she left. My future in-laws are calling me heartless and cruel towards Lilly."
He said her parents told him he should have "done the mature thing" by talking and not "publicly sending her away" to "humiliate" her.
"I realize what I did was humiliating to Lilly and it was not the greatest way to handle the situation, but I'm still struggling to look at Lilly after knowing she thought those things of Kate," the post read. "Was I the a**hole for sending Lilly away?"
Redditor Reactions
More than 2,400 users commented on the post, many criticizing the man's fiancée for her crude comments.
"Lilly absolutely should be humiliated. What she did is atrocious," one user commented.
"He needs to take the ring back, sell it and help sissy with repairs at the shop," another commented. "Then they can all go to Hawaii instead of the wedding."
"YTA if you marry this girl," one user wrote.
"Your sister went through hell to put food on the table for you and your younger sister. Lily didn't give a s**t about that and by extension, doesn't give a s**t about your childhood," another user wrote. "You might want to consider what that means for her feelings towards you, any future children, etc. Some things can't be taken back."
"This is a big f**king deal and absolutely needs to be an instant engagement and relationship ender," another user commented. "If you don't, you are telling your sister that you can forgive someone who went out of their way for no other purpose than to hurt her. Don't. Your sister deserves better."
