A man has died after being shot multiple times during a baby shower in a California home, according to police.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LACSD) said in a Nixle notification that its homicide detectives were at a house in the 3900 block of West 118th Street following a shooting at about 11:50 p.m. on Monday.

There they assisted Hawthorne Police Department officers and found an adult dead at the scene.

According to Fox11, the victim was a man in his mid-20s and had several gunshot wounds on his upper body.

The network added witnesses who told investigators the victim had been in an argument with another man at the baby shower before the suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire.

Fox11 reported the suspect, a man in his early 20s, fled shortly after the shooting. The LACSD did not release any description of the suspect.

In the Nixle statement, the LACSD said there was "no additional information available at this time."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the LACSD's Homicide Bureau on (323) 890-5500.

Newsweek has contacted the LACSD for comment.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, a database that collects information about shootings from across the U.S., 287 people in California have been shot dead since January 1, this year.

Newsweek has previously reported on horrific cases where people have been shot at baby showers in the U.S. In September last year, a family argument at a Pennsylvania baby shower resulted in three people being shot.

When officers arrived at the Kinlock Fire Department following reports there was an active shooter inside the fire hall.

Once there, officers found three people, a 23-year-old man, a woman aged 19 and a 16-year-old boy who had suffered gunshot wounds.

Police later confirmed the incident was not an active shooting, but rather was due to the result of a family argument that spiraled out of control.

In another case that same month, a pregnant woman was shot dead while she tried to break up a fight at her own baby shower in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan.

The fight that Shanice Young, 31, tried to break up was believed to have been between her current partner and her ex, according to sources who spoke to WPIX.
