Commenters are praising a woman who stood up for herself when her fiancé humiliated her in front of his work colleagues.

The anonymous woman, known as u/ttmxg, posted about the incident on Reddit's popular "Am I The A**hole" forum where it received more than 21,000 upvotes and 2,000 comments.

While an estimated 33 million people around the world are bilingual, that number drops significantly for people who are trilingual, with only about 13 percent of the population fluently speaking more than three languages, according to Rosetta Stone.

Individuals who speak more than three languages are considered multilingual, and those who speak more than five are considered polyglots.

In the post titled "AITA for bragging about me being multilingual when my fiancé made fun of my accent?" the anonymous woman, 26, said she has been with her fiancé, 26, for two years and moved to his home country six months ago.

The woman said she spent three months teaching herself Swedish and finally felt comfortable speaking it around others during social gatherings.

"We were having an after work with my fiancé and his colleagues and I mispronounced a word and he made a joke 'she is a work in progress,'" the post read. "Then I made another mistake and he said 'well, should we switch to English so you won't keep embarrassing yourself?'"

She said his colleagues all laughed and she got annoyed so she replied in Swedish: "Well, when you manage to speak 7 languages like I do you will be allowed to make fun of me, at least I'm trying, now excuse me."

She then stood up and left without saying goodbye to anyone, but said looking back she thought it was "rude and kinda cocky."

When her fiancé came home, he said she "humiliated" him and "made a fool" of herself in front of his colleagues.

"So am I the AH?? Should I have played along?" the post concluded.

More than 2,000 users commented on the post, many criticizing the woman's fiancé for being an a**hole.

"NTA. He humiliated you, and expected you to sit there and take it?" one user commented. "He could have asked if you would be more comfortable if they all switched to English instead of insulting you with the suggestion."

"Another day on AITA, another a**hole fiancé throwing out a parade of red flags," another user commented.

"Get all the language certifications and kudos to you for learning so many!" another user wrote. "But question for you—do you like your fiancé? Does he often belittle you?"

Redditor u/ttmxg replied that he is loving when they are alone but turns into a "massive ah" when he's around other people.

"NTA Nobody should be ever made fun of if he/she is trying to learn a new language," one user commented. "Nor should you feel ashamed to make mistakes whilst speaking that new language."

Newsweek reached out to u/ttmxg for comment.

One woman was backed by commenters in a now-deleted Reddit thread after she walked out in the middle of dinner with her future in-laws.

In another viral Reddit thread, a man was supported for doing nothing when security escorted his wife out of his office for "berating" him.

Another woman was backed after she left her boyfriend because he had a "psychotic break" during an argument about folding laundry.
