Man Who Allegedly Stole Beer From Convenience Store Killed In Hit-and-Run While Fleeing

After a man allegedly stole beer from a convenience store in Houston, Texas, he was struck and killed by a driver when trying to flee the scene. Police are searching for the driver because they did not stop to help the man when he was hit.

John Cannon, a spokesperson for the Houston Police Department, told Newsweek that the incident took place Monday at about 8:20 p.m. While responding to the call from the convenience store, officers first found that the alleged suspect, whose identity was not released, was injured.

Cannon explained that after getting hit by the car while in the roadway, the alleged suspect was thrown into a grassy area near a bus stop. He said a light-colored SUV or van was responsible for hitting the man.

"Officers tried to administer first aid on the man until paramedics arrived, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital," Cannon told Newsweek.

He said police identified the man as the alleged suspect who stole beer from the convenience store based on a description that was provided.

As part of the investigation, which has officially been deemed as a hit-and-run, Cannon said officers will reach out to businesses in the area to see if they can get footage of the incident that may have been captured from security cameras. He said officials hope to get more details about the car involved in the hit and run.

Cannon said that Failure to Stop and Render Aid is considered a felony under Texas law. Those convicted may face a fine of up to $5,000 or jail time in addition to a fine.

Officials within the Houston Police Department continue to investigate this incident.

Elsewhere in the United States, a woman turned herself in to authorities for a fatal hit-and-run in October.

Newsweek reported that a 30-year-old woman surrendered herself to police in Detroit following a crash that killed Erica Yancey, a 38-year-old mother of four and her sister-in-law Brittany Jones, a mother of three in her twenties.

According to reports, Yancey and Jones were leaving the Kings & Queens Banquet Hall when they were hit by the car. The driver did not stop and the two women died from their injuries.

The alleged suspect's car was evaluated and it had a great deal of damage on the front.

Newsweek reported that the police department's spokesperson said there is no known connection between the woman in custody and the two mothers.
