A husband has been slammed online after his wife confessed that he used her cell phone to pretend that she'd had a miscarriage in a text to her boss.

The woman took to Reddit to share her dilemma, explaining that her husband's plot was a bid to get her the day off work, so she could attend a family member's gender reveal party. It followed numerous arguments over her apparent reluctance to attend his family events.

In the popular post, with over 9,000 votes, she explained that she is pregnant, but that not many people know yet and her boss certainly did not.

Arguing over pregnancy issues and parenthood is far from rare, with research from Channel Mum finding that one-fifth of couples break up during the 12 months after becoming parents. The research cited dwindling sex lives, a lack of communication and constant arguments as some of the main reasons.

For this mom-to-be, however, the cause of the argument is far from common. After finding out that she wouldn't be able to attend his cousin's gender reveal party due to work, the husband "pitched a hissy fit saying i'm prioritizing work over family and got mad when I told him that a relative's gender reveal party wasn't that important to attend," wrote the wife.

According to the woman, her non-attendance at family parties has long been an issue in their relationship, but she claimed that such parties happen almost weekly.

"The next day, and unbeknown to me, he sent my boss a text using my phone pretending to be me telling him that I was at the hospital because I was having a miscarriage. I could not believe it and for a minute thought it was a joke but seeing how my boss responded just confirmed it. My boss didn't even know I was pregnant and I didn't want to tell him or the others until later on," the wife said to Reddit.

"He told me he did that as a desperate attempt to get me to get some time off work and 'actually focus on what matters'.

"I told him that this was my livelihood he was trying to mess with but he said I basically made him resort to this, and that he wouldn't have to lie if I actually made some time to see and interact with his family and show them back the respect they keep showing me."

The husband, according to the woman, instructed her to simply tell her boss it was a "miscarriage scare" upon her return to work.

His behavior was criticized online, with Reddit users rushing to brand him the "a**hole" in the situation, dubbing his actions "unforgivable" and many even suggesting a divorce.

"I'm not one of those people who immediately jumps to divorce in every situation... but if I was OP I would divorce this guy," wrote one user, while another agreed, writing: "For the sake of yourself and your child you need a divorce ASAP. If he's willing to go to that length already, I see him attempting to sabotage your job more in the future and it could eventually cost you said job."

"This is really concerning," stated another. "For all the reasons you list. NTA at all. What he did is unforgivable. The only question is whether he can grow up enough to realize how bad his behavior was. You guys need counseling, and he needs to be forced to justify himself to an objective outsider."

Others cited the lie itself being a cause for concern, noting: "The fact that he can lie about the death of his child and not see how incredibly f*** up that is, is what's concerning."
