Margot Robbie Slammed for Impromptu Brad Pitt Kiss—'Is That Not Assault?'

Margot Robbie's has admitted that she gave Brad Pitt an unscripted kiss in their new movie Babylon.

Robbie retold the story from the set in a recent interview, but it's been met with anger by many online who are claiming that an impromptu kiss is "assault" and if she were a man, she would have been "canceled."

Babylon is the latest movie from La La Land filmmaker Damien Chazelle, which co-stars Robbie and Pitt as character living in 1920s Hollywood as they transition from silent movies to talkies.

In a recent interview with E! News, Robbie admitted she went for a kiss with Pitt's character in an unscripted moment.

"You know that was improvised?" Robbie told the reporter. "That wasn't in the script but I thought, 'when else am I gonna get the chance to kiss Brad Pitt. I'm just gonna go for it.' It was just great."

Robbie's comment were shared on Twitter and generated thousands of responses.

"Man would get canceled for the same thing," wrote @Alter5Star, gaining 17,000 likes for their comment. @ctrlrow_ asked "Is that not assault?" which also got thousands of likes.

"No [because] consent," replied another user, including the full context from Robbie's interview.

The Oscar-nominated Australian actress detailed more about the moment in the same E! News interview.

"I said, 'Damien, I think Nellie would just go up and kiss Jack,' she said, referring to their characters in the film and the filmmaker, Chazelle. "And Damien was like, 'Well, she could—wait, hold on. You just wanna kiss Brad Pitt.' And I was like, 'Oh, so sue me. This opportunity might never come up again.' And he was like, 'It does work for the character,' and I was like, 'I think so.'"

Robbie continued: "And so I did it first time and finished that take and I was like…'Thanks Damien,' and he was like, 'No, do it again. That works.'"

Robbie added: "I actually kissed Katherine [Waterstone] as well but I don't know if that made the cut."

"Now imagine if this was the other way around," wrote @ivicvic_ on Twitter, once again getting thousands of likes for suggesting the situation would be received differently if the genders were reversed.

"Why, in this political climate, would you share this information with us?" another added.

The admission was also discussed on Reddit, with one thread created by u/Bee_NotArthur suggesting it's an example of why intimacy coordinators should be "mandatory" on movie sets.

Newsweek previously spoke to TikTok influencer and intimacy coordinator Jessica Steinrock, who called for a professional to be present on every movie set, while Sam Mendes described his positive experience using one for the first time on his new movie Empire of Light.

Babylon will be out in movie theaters on Friday December 23, 2022.
