Marjorie Taylor Greene Accuses Joe Biden of Treason

Marjorie Taylor Greene has called for the ongoing Republican impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden to be expanded to cover his policy over migration across the southern border, which she dubbed treason.

The House Republican also backed the suggestion that Biden's border policy amounts to "insurrection," and thus he should be removed from the 2024 presidential ballot in red states. This appears to be retaliation for the Colorado Supreme Court ruling that Donald Trump is not eligible to run for president again in the state because of his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election result and the January 6 2021 attack on Congress by his supporters.

Republicans reacted with fury to the Colorado court's ruling on Tuesday, which Trump's team have vowed to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. The 4-3 decision was based on section three of the Constitution's 14th Amendment. This states no person shall be "a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military" who after taking an oath "to support the Constitution" went on to engage in "insurrection or rebellion." Republicans in a number of states have suggested Biden should be removed from 2024 presidential ballots in response.

In an interview on Tuesday with the John Solomon Reports podcast, hosted by online publication Just the News, Greene said: "We should be impeaching Joe Biden over the border. And I'm starting to think impeachment is not enough. I think these people should be held accountable for treason over what is happening at our southern border."

Treason, defined as "levying war against the United States, or adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort" is a federal crime bearing the maximum sentence of death, though in practice only a few dozen cases have been prosecuted in American history.

Under the Biden administration the number of suspected illegal migrants detained entering the U.S. across the Mexico border has surged to a record high, hitting 2.4 million in the 2023 fiscal year that concluded in September.

Greene also shared a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, by Wade Miller, of conservative campaign group Citizens for Renewing America. Miller wrote that, "if we are to accept the premise of the Colorado decision removing Trump from the ballot," a similar move should be made against Biden.

He wrote: "A committee or sub-committee of the United States Congress should issue a report finding that President Biden, by refusing to faithfully execute the laws of the United States, by allowing an open borders invasion, and any Democrat who has voted against bills to secure the United States border, is guilty of insurrection.

"On this basis, red states, who have complimentary judicial powers, state constitutional powers, executive powers, or legislative powers, should act to ban President Biden, and all relevant Democrats, from their state ballots."

Greene added: "I am one member of Congress serving on Homeland and Oversight Committees that is 100% on board with this.

"Joe Biden is guilty of treason and the Democrat Party has opened a door they should have NEVER opened. They should be forced to live by their own rules."

Newsweek has reached out to the White House press office for comment by email.

Earlier this month the Republican controlled House of Representatives formally backed an impeachment inquiry into Biden, potentially setting the stage for a full impeachment trial. They are investigating claims Biden abused his power to support the business interests of his son, Hunter Biden, though no solid proof has been produced thus far. The president strongly denies wrongdoing and has insisted he has no involvement with his son's business activities.
