Marjorie Taylor Greene Admits Republicans Won't Investigate 2020 Election

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene suggested Tuesday that there isn't much of an appetite for going back to investigate the 2020 election that former President Donald Trump's allies have continued to baselessly allege was stolen.

During an appearance on Steve Bannon's War Room, the Georgia Republican spoke about how she objected to the 2020 election results on January 6, 2021, and "would do it again right now."

"Literally right now if I could," Greene added. "But I'm being honest because I don't want people to have false hope or false expectations, and I think that's the right thing."

Bannon then chimed in to ask if Greene was saying that there's no desire among her colleagues to look back at 2020 and potentially probe the contentious election.

"I'm pretty sure most of them just want to move on," Greene responded.

"We might not even be able to win in [2024] if we don't care about our elections...Our elections have to be protected and they're not," she continued.

Greene has been the subject of criticism and scrutiny this week for her recent remarks that the January 6 Capitol riot "would've been armed" if she organized it. Speaking as part of a headline appearance at the New York Young Republican Club's 110th Annual Gala on Saturday night, Greene dismissed allegations that she was involved in planning the riot, but said that "we would have won" if she and Bannon had plotted it.

"See that's the whole joke, isn't it? They say that whole thing was planned, and I'm like, are you kidding me? A bunch of conservatives, Second-Amendment supporters, went in the Capitol without guns, and they think that we organized that?" she added.

On January 6, a mob of Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol building in an attempt to halt the certification of President Joe Biden's election win. A Newsweek fact check determined that claims asserting no members of the January 6 mob were carrying guns are false.

After the White House condemned her remarks on Monday, Greene took to Twitter to defend herself.

"The White House needs to learn how sarcasm works. My comments were making fun of Joe Biden and the Democrats, who have continuously made me a political target since January 6th," Greene wrote.

A group of Georgia voters sought to disqualify Greene from seeking reelection earlier this year over allegations that she helped facilitate the riot. A judge ruled in May that she could remain on the ballot, and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger affirmed the recommendation.

Newsweek reached out to Greene's office for further comment.
