Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called for a ban on Kamala Harris in response to the vice president's call for assault weapons to be banned.

Harris, who President Joe Biden asked to lead the first-ever federal Office of Gun Violence Prevention last month, on Monday reiterated a called for Congress to pass an assault weapons ban.

"Weapons of war have no place on the streets of a civil society," she wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter. "We need an assault weapons ban. Congress, send it to @JoeBiden's desk."

Greene, a Georgia Republican who opposes gun control, took issue with Harris' words.

"America needs a ban on communist politicians like you," Greene wrote in response.

"Shame on you for trying to destroy Americans' right to defend ourselves while your policies have caused skyrocketing crime and our country to be invaded by criminals, gangs, and terrorists."

Newsweek has contacted Greene's office and the vice president's office for comment via email.

More than 500 people have been killed in mass shootings so far in 2023, according to the Gun Violence Archive, including three children and three adults at a Nashville elementary school in March. Police said the shooter, who was killed by police, was armed with two "assault-type" guns and a pistol.

Harris spoke about the difficulty of passing an assault weapons ban at an event at the College of Southern Nevada on Thursday, and shared a clip of her remarks on her official X account on Monday.

"It's not rocket science in terms of what we need to do. Okay?" she said.

"But you got a bunch of feckless people who lack courage, who are in the United States Congress, who are pushing a false choice, which suggests you're either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone's guns away. And it's a false choice. I'm in favor of the Second Amendment, but we need an assault weapons ban. We need universal background checks. We need red flag laws."

The White House announced the creation of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention that will be overseen by Harris, a former prosecutor and state attorney general, last month.

Among its directives is to ensure a federal gun safety law passed last year is being fully implemented. That law toughened background checks for buyers under 21, sought to keep firearms from domestic violence offenders and aimed to help states put in place red flag laws that make it easier to take weapons away from people judged to be dangerous.

"Nearly a year after the horrific shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs, we have to fully implement the most significant gun safety law in nearly 30 years and then pass again the assault weapons ban," Biden said at a Human Rights Campaign dinner in Washington on Saturday.

The president added: "Who in God's name needs a weapon with 100 rounds in a chamber? The weapon was only meant for one thing: to kill people. We did it before. We can do it again. As long as I'm in office, I'm not going to stop until we get it done again."
