Paul Pelosi could have fended off his attacker if he had a gun, according to Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Greene blamed the recent attack at the Pelosis' San Fransisco residence on Democratic policies regarding immigration and gun laws, in a Twitter post Tuesday.

"If Paul Pelosi was a 2A supporting gun owner he could have shot the man that was trying to kill him," the Republican congresswoman tweeted. "It's dangerous Democrat policies that led to Paul Pelosi being attacked."

Last Friday, the 82-year-old husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was violently assaulted in their home by an attacker who police have identified as David DePape. Mr. Pelosi sustained a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands, according to a spokesperson. On Monday, federal prosecutors charged DePape with attempted kidnapping and assault of an immediate family member of a U.S. official.

Greene also blamed the attack on Mr. Pelosi on Democratic immigration policies, saying that stricter laws would have prevented DePape, who grew up in British Columbia, Canada, from breaking into the Pelosi home.

"David Depape was an illegal alien that overstayed his visa & should have been deported," the Georgia Republican tweeted.

Earlier this week, DePape's grandfather told CNN that the accused attacker left Canada about 20 years ago to pursue a relationship that led him to California.

Greene had initially responded to the news by saying the attack was an example of the violence and crime "rampant in Joe Biden's America."

In the days since the attack, some Republicans have denounced DePape's actions, while others, like Greene, have blamed the incident on Democratic policies.

Over the weekend, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel told Fox News, "If this weren't Paul Pelosi, this criminal would probably be out on the street tomorrow."

"This is what Democrat policies are bringing," McDaniel said.

At the same time, Republicans have also faced scrutiny from those who argue GOP rhetoric about Democratic officials is what led to the attack on Mr. Pelosi.

Following the incident, Greene's previous statements suggesting that Nancy Pelosi should be killed over alleged "treason" resurfaced, as social media users suggested she encouraged people like DePape.

In response, the congresswoman said it is "completely wrong for any member of Congress to receive death threats," while alleging that "death threats like these are consistent because of Twitter's blue check mark insane left's crazy conspiracy theories & lies about me."

Newsweek reached out to Pelosi for comment.
