Marjorie Taylor Greene has hit out at "Communist Democrats," whom she said were responsible for the cancellation of a book signing she had organized in Kissimmee, Florida, on Saturday. It has since been relocated to Orlando.
In a video posted on X, formerly Twitter, Greene said she "wanted to come on and declare victory over the cancel culture communists" after finding a new venue for her event. She added that Democrats are destroying democracy in the United States. Newsweek reached out to the Washington D.C. office of Rep. Greene by telephone and voicemail message on Saturday.
In the three years since January 6, 2021 Capitol Hill riot, more than 1,200 people have been charged in connection with the attack. This includes around 440 accused of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers or employees; 120 people charged with using a deadly or dangerous weapon or causing serious bodily injury to an officer; and four who admitted to a charge of seditious conspiracy.
Greene had been scheduled to attend a signing of her new book MTG at Westgate Resorts in Kissimmee, Florida, with the Republican Party of Osceola County hosting the event. However, after NBC News showed Westgate Resorts an event invitation linking the occasion to the third anniversary of the Capitol Hill riot, the company canceled the booking, saying: "Westgate was not made aware of the purpose of this event when we were approached to host a book signing."
On Friday, Greene posted a two-minute, 20-second video on X, condemning those she said were behind the cancellation, and urging her supporters to head to Orlando instead. The Republican wrote: "The Communist Democrats tried to shut down my book signing. They lost! I'll be in Orlando, FL tomorrow night at a new venue to sign copies of my brand new book MTG."

In the video, Greene blamed the original event cancellation on her political opponents, saying: "You may have seen in the news today because the Democrats are loving it and the left-leaning media are all about it, twisting and lying about the story, but I am so excited to announce that they couldn't cancel my book signing tomorrow on January 6.
"This has been absolutely outrageous, the Democrats want to do anything to cancel everything I say, cancel the words you speak because they hate free speech and lets be really honest about who the Democrats are," Greene added.
She said that Democrats were undermining U.S. democracy: "They claim they're defending democracy but you and I both know they're not defending democracy, they're destroying democracy and they're destroying democracy by attacking our First Amendment, canceling our words, canceling your social media accounts, canceling everything you think and feel."
Senior figures within the Democratic and Republican parties have both accused the other of threatening American democracy as the country enters what is expected to be a bitterly contested presidential election year.
Speaking at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, on Friday, Biden argued Donald Trump, the current Republican presidential frontrunner, is a danger to democracy. The Democrat cited his predecessor's refusal to accept the result of the November 2020 election and the attack storming of Congress by his supporters on January 6, 2021.

In his speech, Biden said Trump had tried to steal the election, adding: "You can't be pro-insurrectionist and pro-American." Using some of his most-emotive language yet, at a historic location where George Washington once commanded troops during the Revolutionary War, Biden added: "There's no confusion about who Trump is or what he intends to do. We all know who Donald Trump is. The question is: Who are we?
"We must be clear; democracy is on the ballot. Your freedom is on the ballot," the president said.
Trump hit back during a campaign rally in Iowa, accusing the president of "pathetic fearmongering" and "abusing George Washington's legacy."
Of the four most-recent national polls for a potential Trump vs. Biden presidential showdown, three gave the Republican frontrunner the lead, with the fourth finding both candidates were tied on 44 percent.
