Marjorie Taylor Greene has hit back at social media users who criticized her son for hunting.

The Republican congresswoman, who represents Georgia's 14th district, sparked backlash when she posted a photo on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday showing her 20-year-old son, Derek, crouching with a deer that he had shot and killed and a gun.

Hunting deer is legal in Georgia but subject to regulations that include the number of deer one person can hunt in a season, which lasts from September to January.

"I'm so proud of my son Derek," Greene wrote.

But her tweet garnered outrage, with one X user saying "your son should be locked up like you," and another saying "killing an innocent animal in its natural habitat" was "absolutely disgusting."

A third wrote: "Hunting for food is one thing. Hunting for sport is another. Not cool at all. Especially not cool posting this sickening picture."

In a follow-up post on X, the politician who is a supporter of Donald Trump, said people's comments were "hateful."

"It's sad that so many people commented here in such hateful uneducated way," she wrote.

"We live in terrible times that so many people have such petty and materialistic views that they think posting up pictures of an animal some one hunted has to be a giant game, decked out in name brand hunting clothes, with the most expensive name brand rifle with the sole purpose to impress people on social media.

"I posted this joyfully and said I'm proud of my son for many reasons."

She added that she had requested her son kill a deer so they could have "meat for Thanksgiving week" and that she was "proud of him" for doing what she had asked.

"That's what good kids do," she said. "They respect their parents."

Adding that she was "blessed by him and the food he has provided for our family," she said comments criticizing him were "naïve" and that those against hunting "wouldn't know how to survive if something really bad happened and they couldn't go to the grocery store or order Uber Eats from their couch."

"The skills and knowledge on how to hunt and farm should be taught to every generation just as they are taught how read," she continued.

Newsweek has contacted representatives for Greene by email to comment on this story.

Greene has three children, Lauren, Taylor and Derek, with her former husband, Perry, a construction mogul.

Her husband filed for divorce from the politician on September 27, 2022, saying the marriage is "irretrievably broken."
