"Contemporary" Meghan Markle "resonates" because she married into a "one-way, one perspective" establishment, according to a friend.

Daniel Martin, her wedding day makeup artist who has worked with her for years, described the Duchess of Sussex as an "authentic friend."

In a video chat on Entertainment Tonight, he told how Meghan had helped give his work a "larger platform" before revealing it is her relatability that fans connect with.

He said: "I feel like what she represents is now. She is contemporary and people felt she resonates on so many levels because here is someone we all know, we all have a friend that looks like her, who is marrying into this establishment which was very one-way, one perspective.

"I feel like globally she resonates on so many levels not only because of how she looks but who she is. And I think for me to associate myself with her there's a responsibility.

"I'm very fortunate that we're authentic friends so I feel like I have to do and be as good because we're all in this together. She gave me this incredible gift and now it's my responsibility to share that."

Meghan and Prince Harry announced they would step back as senior royals in January and began the new era of their lives in April.

The dramatic decision came after a rift with Prince William and run-ins with the media, who she accused of having an "agenda" against her.

Martin was responsible for the natural look Meghan wore to her fairytale wedding to Prince Harry at St. George's Chapel, in Windsor Castle, on May 19, 2018.

Entertainment Tonight viewers heard how one inspired young woman realized she could be beautiful while wearing less makeup.

Martin said: "It's just interesting because what I did with her on her wedding day was something I've always done throughout the years with my clients.

"So just to understand that perspective of how it made other people feel, because my goal that day was just to make sure my friend felt good on her wedding day.

"It wasn't about the spectacle of who she was marrying, the wedding. I just wanted her to feel as beautiful as she did like any bride on her wedding day.

"To read those documents that enabled young girls to really understand the power of makeup, of how it made them feel, was really interesting because I had never thought of it like that."
