Suspect in shooting is expected to be arraigned Friday
Middleborough Police have released the name of the suspect in Friday's shooting incident.
Raymond Gibson, age 55 from Falmouth, Massachusetts, was charged with:
- Disturbing the peace
- Discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building
- Discharging a firearm near a highway
- Two counts of malicious destruction to a motor vehicle
Gibson has a valid licence to carry a firearm. The .357 revolver that was seized near the spot where Gibson was arrested is registered in his name. His license has been since been suspended.
Gibson is expected to be arraigned today at Wareham District Court.
At this time, police said it does not appear that Gibson was targeting any specific individuals or groups. Gibson's motives remain under investigation.
"We're extremely thankful that no one was injured in this incident," Chief Jospeh Perkins said in a statement. "I want to commend the tremendous response by our law enforcement partners and others who helped to quickly set up a perimeter and search that led to the apprehension of this dangerous individual."
"This was not an easy response given the heavy rain from the storm and it was great work by our officer who spotted the suspect in the woods, leading to his arrest," he added.
Shelter in place advisory lifted
At a press conference Friday at noon, Middleborough Police confirm the shooting suspect was "arrested peacefully" after a search through the woods in the rain.
The suspect was found near a large apartment complex at around 11:30 a.m. Friday. The suspect was not from the area, police said.
The suspect is still being processed and the incident is still under investigation.
"I commend the officers for standing in this [rain] and protecting the community," Chief Joseph Perkins told reporters.
So far, police said the suspect acted alone when he fired shots at a window at the Department of Transportation facility from across the road.
"I'm not sure if it's the window of a vehicle or a window of the building," Perkins said.
Police said a weapon was recovered and restated that there were no injuries reported.
The shelter-in-place advisory has been lifted and roads are beginning to open up again.
Chief Joseph Perkins told reporters that he will release updates later once they know more information.
