A woman has been backed online for banning her husband from seeing her sister after he was accused of starting an argument by making a "sexist" remark at a family dinner.
The wife shared her story in a Reddit post on Monday, under the username u/Acceptable_Koala_651, where she explained that her husband Tom and sister Marie, don't get along well and never have, because they have very different views and values, and they are both very opinionated.
In the past this has led to arguments, because Tom finds it "funny to watch Marie react when he says things to provoke her."
Marie recently had a baby girl with her husband and threw a dinner so that the family could meet her daughter, but Tom didn't hold back with his views once he heard about their family arrangements.
During the dinner, Marie announced that her husband would be the one staying at home and taking care of their daughter, while she pursues her career goals.
According to data by the National Fatherhood Initiative, fathers are becoming more emotionally engaged in parenting. In 2022, approximately seven percent of dads and 28 percent of moms stay at home full-time. At the beginning of the 2000s, only five percent of dads and 23 percent of moms identified as stay-at-home parents.
While dads usually spend an average of only eight hours per week on childcare, moms spend an average of 14 hours per week.
Despite the poster warning her husband not to argue with her sister on this occasion, when Tom heard the news, he said: "Oh I thought mom was supposed to do that", a comment that Zach, Marie's husband, found sexist.
Zach explained to Tom that his remark came across as "pretty sexist" and that his wife "shouldn't give up all the hard work she just did..."
After the family dinner ended, the poster told her husband that he's not allowed to accompany her to visit her sister again, because she is "done with him embarrassing [her]."
The post shared on the r/AmItheA**hole subreddit has received over 12,300 upvotes in less than a day. One user, Selppa_, said: "[NotTheA**hole], but your husband f***ing sucks."
Another user, saltedfish, wrote: "[NotTheA**hole]. Tom sounds like the kinda guy who likes to pick fights just to see the fallout because it's ultimately about control. He likes seeing the effect he has on people and seeing them get upset over something he says.
"Adults can control themselves as well. Adults also take responsibility for their actions and try to better themselves without resorting to 'it's their fault they got offended at something I said.' This is toddler s***. Tom needs to grow up and realize the whole "I'm an intelekshual and must therefore debate everyone always all the time" stopped being cute in high school."

"Whether he's arguing that stance genuinely or just for kicks, he sounds exhausting. (And in my experience the 'contrarian 'debate me' bros' tend to fall on the conservative side of the spectrum anyway)."
