The NBA was compared to Mortal Kombat by some sports fanatics this week after fights erupted on two separate courts.

The games in question, which resulted in several players being ejected from the games, were part of the NBA In-Season Tournament, the new competition put in place by the NBA to boost fan and player interest in regular season play.

Fans are talking but it's not certain this is what the NBA had in mind.

After less than two minutes of gameplay, an altercation broke out in Golden State between the Warriors and the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night. No point had yet been scored.

As captured and shared on X, formerly Twitter by the Warriors' account @NBCSWarriors, a dispute escalated quickly when Klay Thompson from the Warriors and Jaden McDaniels from the Timberwolves grabbed each other's jerseys.

Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert appeared to try to break up the fight by grabbing Thompson but was soon subdued and put in a headlock, or a chokehold, by the Warriors' Draymond Green, who dragged him away.

The short but game-stopping fight saw Thompson, McDaniels, and Green all ejected.

"LOL, no one had even scored a bucket, and these folks out here fighting. Gods, I love the #NBA... there's always some drama," a social media user commented.

Another said: "No score, not even a couple of minutes into the game. Yeah get that criminal up outta here."

On Reddit, one user joked: "Lmao this is the weirdest start to a game I've ever seen."

Other comments included "2 minutes, 1 fight, 0 points" and "How do you go back to playing a whole game when the score is 0-0 and guys are already in head locks and 3 people ejected."

The Timberwolves won 104-101 to lead the Western Conference's Group C.

Things didn't stop there as the same night, a game between Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies also saw an altercation break out.

Posted on X by account @TheDunkCentral, a video of the incident was captioned: "Now we got drama in the Lakers and Grizzlies game."

After Lakers' star Anthony Davis scored, he got into a shoving match with Memphis' Santi Aldama, which ended with the latter on his back.

Desmond Bane, Memphis guard, closed in on Davis with the two bumping chests in a heated display; both eventually cooled off and the game continued.

The tension also reached Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins, who became involved. Davis, Aldama, Bane, Jenkins, and Lakers guard D'Angelo Russell all received technical fouls.

The Lakers won 134-107 to take the lead in Group A of the Western Conference.

On Reddit a viewer said: "[NBA commissioner Adam] Silver wanted a tournament and he got Mortal Kombat."

Another quipped "Damn everyone wildin' tonight" and a third said: "Never thought I'd see a fight between the Timberwolves, Warriors, Grizzlies, and Lakers would happen at the same day."

Newsweek has reached out Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies via email for comment.
