Police in Winder, a small city to the east of Atlanta, Georgia, have responded to the scene of what appears to be a multiple shooting.

In a statement at around 6:30 a.m. ET on Thursday, Barrow County Sheriff's Office said deputies and investigators were attending a home in the Kendall Park area, on the southwestern outskirts of the city, where "possibly multiple people inside the home" had been shot.

The sheriff's office said it was "working to find out more details to determine what happened" but added that "it does not appear that the public is in any immediate danger at this time."

Local news station WSBTV reported, citing officials, that two people had been shot dead and one other injured during the incident. Deputies arrived to find a 66-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man dead, it said, while a 35-year-old man had also been shot and was later taken to a hospital in the area.

The younger man was reported to have made a call to the emergency services, which Barrow County Sheriff's Office received around 5:42 a.m. The names of the victims have yet to be released.

The official statement did not disclose when the shooting is thought to have occurred, nor whether the suspected shooter had been identified or detained.

The latest shooting follows several others in the local area in recent weeks. On Monday, officers in west Atlanta responded to the scene of a man who was shot dead on the street, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

As part of an investigation into the incident, officers attempted to execute a search warrant at a nearby property the following day that led to a stand-off with a SWAT team. This was ultimately resolved when the suspect surrendered, it said.

On January 30, a gunman opened fire on three people inside an apartment in the early hours of the morning in Snellville, east of Atlanta, before turning the weapon on himself.

Police said that a man and a woman were killed in the incident, along with the suspected shooter, while another woman was taken to hospital with injuries that were thought not to be life-threatening.

A two-month-old baby and another woman who had been in the home at the time were both unharmed.
