Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was attacked at his San Francisco home on Friday morning.

"Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi. The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation," Nancy Pelosi's spokesman, Drew Hammill, said in a statement.

According to the statement, Paul Pelosi was taken to a nearby hospital, "where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery." Speaker Pelosi was not at the home when the attack occurred, the statement said.

"The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time," Hammill added.

Newsweek reached out to Pelosi's office for updated information.

A possible motive for the attack was unclear and no information about a suspect was released. Newsweek reached out to the San Francisco Police Department for comment.

In a statement on Friday, the U.S. Capitol Police in Washington, D.C., said that it is assisting the San Francisco Police Department and the FBI "with a joint investigation into a break-in at the California home of the Speaker of the House of Representatives."

"The San Francisco Police Department has the suspect in custody. The motivation for the attack is still under investigation," the statement said. "Special Agents with the USCP's California Field Office quickly arrived on scene, while a team of investigators from the Department's Threat Assessment Section was simultaneously dispatched from the East Coast to assist the FBI and the San Francisco Police with a joint investigation."

This is not the first time a crime has occurred at or near a politician's home in recent months. In July, a man armed with a gun was arrested outside Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal's home in Seattle, Washington. A spokesperson for Jayapal's office previously confirmed to Newsweek that the progressive representative was home at the time of the incident. The suspect reportedly yelled that he was going to kill Jayapal if she didn't "go back to India."

Earlier this month, two individuals were shot outside New York GOP congressman Lee Zeldin's home. Zeldin, who is running for governor, said in a statement that he was not home at the time, but his two daughters were.

Shortly after the attack on Paul Pelosi was reported on Friday, several of Nancy Pelosi's colleagues posted tweets calling for a quick recovery.

"We pray for a speedy recovery for Mr Pelosi, and want the violent criminal held accountable and put behind bars," Nebraska Republican Representative Don Bacon wrote in a tweet.

Iowa Republican Senator Chuck Grassley wrote: "I wish Mr Pelosi well & pray for a quick recovery Everyone deserves 2b respected & violence is never okay."

Massachusetts Democratic Representative Lori Trahan wrote: "This is terrifying. I'm hoping for a full and speedy recovery for Paul, and my heart goes out to @SpeakerPelosi and her entire family during this unbelievably difficult time."
