How to Watch 'Narcos: Mexico' Season 2: Netflix Release Date, Plot and More Show Info

It's been more than a year since Netflix expanded its Narcos universe with the story of Guadalajara overlord Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo in Narcos: Mexico, but the show is finally making its way back to the streaming giant.

Narcos: Mexico Season 2 is set to release on Netflix on Thursday. Fans of the series, which stars Diego Luna as the Mexican cartel kingpin Félix, will be able to start streaming the new season at 3 a.m. ET.

Like Narcos, which chronicled Colombia's cocaine trade and Pablo Escobar's rise to power, Narcos: Mexico Season 2 will feature 10 episodes.

While the first season of Narcos: Mexico told the story of how the ex-cop Félix became one of Mexico's most feared cartel leaders, Season 2 will explore his downfall. The actual Gallardo—or El Padrino as he was once referred to—is still behind bars serving a 40-year prison sentence.

Félix made it through Season 1 notably unscathed despite playing a long and violent game of cat-and-mouse with Kiki Camarena. an undercover Mexican-American agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), played by Michael Peña. After ditching his job on the Sinaloa police force, Félix launched a new enterprise—the Guadalajara Cartel—which became one of Mexico's biggest drug trafficking organizations. His ability to bring the country's drug lords together to create one single Mexican alliance challenged Colombia's Medellin and Cali Cartels' influence in the global drug trade and essentially made Félix one of the most powerful (and wealthiest) traffickers in the world in the 1980s.

But Camarena posed a big threat to the expansion of Félix's organization, thus resulting in the crime boss ordering the kidnapping, torture and killing of the DEA agent in the final episodes of Season 1. However, he overestimated his power when he orchestrated the killing of the agent. When the show returns, he'll face unexpected consequences when the DEA sends agent Walt Breslin (Scoot McNairy) to bring Félix down.

Although the collapse of Félix's empire will be a major theme in Season 2, the new episodes may also hint at the future of the series. Félix's demise may give way to an uprising of a new leader—someone heavily involved with his organization and one who is already a familiar face for Narcos: Mexico fans—Joaquín Guzmán, otherwise known as El Chapo.

Alejandro Edda is back to reprise his role as a young Joaquín, along with other key players affiliated with Félix, including José María Yazpik as Amado Carrillo Fuentes, Gerardo Taracena as Pablo Acosta and Teresa Ruiz as Isabella Bautista.
