Josh Hammer
Newsweek Senior Editor-at-Large And Host,
"The Josh Hammer Show"

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday. Here are some highlights from the past week.

My most recent column discussed my Young America's Foundation talk on Thursday, Nov. 16, at the University of Michigan, on the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. My talk was protested and disrupted by a group of 20-25 pro-Hamas students, who brazenly shouted down and drowned out my speech within minutes of my starting. The public university's administrators and campus police acted shamefully in failing to secure my First Amendment right to free speech from the heckler's veto (which is itself not a constitutionally protected form of "speech"), and the university has thus far been deafeningly quiet. The day after my talk, the protestors stormed the office of the president of the entire university—seemingly in response to the fact a Jewish speaker spoke in passionate defense of Israel the night prior. I am now working with my friends at the Florida-based Palm Beach Freedom Institute (where I'm now a fellow) to send a letter to Michigan lawmakers and other interested parties seeking a formal investigation into what happened. Unless there are serious repercussions, we can only expect more of the same sordid behavior, moving forward.

I have had two podcast episodes since our last episode. First, I was joined by Brooke Goldstein, founder and executive director of The Lawfare Project, founder of the End Jew Hatred movement, and author of the forthcoming End Jew Hatred: A Manual for Mobilization, for a discussion on the shocking recent rise of antisemitism on college campuses, the foreign interests (namely, Qatar) that are funding it, and what Americans can do to fight back. You can listen to that episode on Apple, Spotify, or here. Second, I recorded a solo episode, released this morning, where I discussed the latest updates from Israel, including the extended hostage release-related "pause"/ceasefire that is amazing for the reunited families but unfortunately makes it very difficult (if not impossible) for Israel to finish the job against Hamas in Gaza. You can listen to that episode on Apple, Spotify, or here. Also, a reminder: My show is now officially on the radio! You can tune in Saturdays at 6:00 PM PDT/9:00 PM EDT and Sundays at 8:00 AM PDT/11:00 AM EDT to AM 770 KTTH (Seattle) to hear new episodes of "The Josh Hammer Show." If you are a radio station manager interested in bringing my show to your station, please email Jesse Edwards: j.edwards@newsweek.com.

In terms of other media hits and appearances since our last newsletter, I guest-hosted "The Jason Rantz Show" on AM 770 KTTH (Seattle) last Wednesday, and you can listen here to hour 1, hour 2, and hour 3 of the show; joined NTD News to discuss the shouting down of my Michigan YAF talk; joined "Rob Schmitt Tonight" (guest-hosted by Carl Higbie) on Newsmax to discuss Elon Musk's defamation lawsuit against Media Matters for America; joined "In Focus" on One America News Network to discuss Greta Thunberg's turn toward anti-Semitism and the underlying hatred of Western civilization that underlies everything from climate fanaticism to the "Palestinian" cause; and joined "I'm Right w/ Jesse Kelly" on The First to discuss the Western world's self-hating elites and my recent ill-fated visit to Michigan.

In terms of upcoming public appearances, I am very excited about an event at The Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 7, alongside my good friend Karol Markowicz (primarily of the New York Post), on the very timely topic of "Jewish Gun Ownership and Self-Defense." I will also be speaking this Sunday, Dec. 3 at a pre-Chanukah Israel solidarity event in Surfside, Florida, co-hosted by Miami Young Republicans, Young Jewish Conservatives, and Broward Young Republicans.

Our additional highlighted right-leaning Newsweek op-eds from the past week include selections from former President Donald J. Trump, Ryan Walters, Gordon G. Chang, Aviva Klompas, and Jonathan Tobin.

Thanks for subscribing! Please share the word about this newsletter throughout your social circles. We'll be back next week.

The University of Michigan Failed To Protect My Right To Free Speech

I arrived at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on Thursday, Nov. 16 to deliver a speech on Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza. The talk's blunt title, selected by the local Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) chapter, reflected my own unambiguous approach to the conflict: "Israel's Righteous Fight Against Jihadism." Given the nature of the talk, given the highly noxious climate now pervading campuses when it comes to this topic in particular, and given the harrowing images of massive anti-Israel gatherings in nearby Dearborn, I anticipated possible fireworks and worked with YAF on event security measures.

Those security measures, unfortunately, turned out to be necessary.

Within minutes of starting my speech, 20 to 25 protestors stood up in unison. They held their arms high in the air to expose their shirts, which featured photos of Palestinian-Arabs who have died in Gaza since the war started. (The students are unaware of, or simply disinterested in, the fact that every one of those deaths is legally attributable to Hamas under international law.) Undeterred, I continued. A few minutes later, the students began obnoxiously coughing in unison each time I opened my mouth, in a clear attempt to drown me out. I reminded them of the university's code of conduct, which prohibits shouting down speakers, but that only made them cough louder.
