"The Josh Hammer Show"

Welcome back! Here are some highlights from the past week.

My column last week, written after the Iowa caucuses but before the New Hampshire primary, argued that now is the time for Republicans to unify and rally behind President Donald Trump. As a former supporter of Gov. Ron DeSantis's (R-Fla.) ill-fated presidential campaign, I harbor no illusions about Trump's flaws and shortcomings. But he is preferable to President Joe Biden by many orders of magnitude. That necessitates a sober—perhaps for some, even cynical or jaded—vote for Trump this fall against Biden and the radical Democrats. While I understand the intense frustration of my fellow former DeSantis supporters who would instead now prefer to vote for Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s third-party bid (or simply stay home), I simply disagree with the calculus: The nature of modern American political elections is that one of the two major parties necessarily wins. It is important to live in the real world and deal with that ineluctable two-party system reality.

I have had two podcast episodes since our last newsletter. First, in an episode recorded before Gov. DeSantis dropped out of the presidential race, I discussed the need for Republicans to rally behind Donald Trump following his landslide victory in the Iowa caucuses (and now the New Hampshire primary), the inevitable onslaught of mainstream media fearmongering about Trump that is to come, my first-hand experience visiting Israel earlier this month, and more. You can listen to that first episode on Apple, Spotify, or here. Second, Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kans.) joined the show for a bonus episode to discuss the dangerously wide-open southern border, President Biden's serious threat to American democracy, the need for GOP outreach to labor unions, and why many Americans have lost trust in the medical establishment. You can listen to that second episode on Apple, Spotify, or here. Also, a reminder: My show is now on the radio! If you are a radio station manager interested in bringing my show to your station, please email Jesse Edwards at j.edwards@newsweek.com.

In terms of other articles and media hits since our last newsletter two weeks ago, I had a 15-station radio tour last Thursday morning to discuss my recent trip to Israel, including appearances on "The Ross Kaminsky Show" (KOA Colorado), "WGY Mornings with Doug Goudie" (Albany, N.Y.), and "The Ryan Gorman Show" (Newsradio WFLA Tampa); recorded a CenterClip audio op-ed about the Houthi threat to global energy prices (as an aside, I am also very excited about the impending partnership between CenterClip and Newsweek!); joined the "Steve Deace Show" for the always-entertaining "Deace Group" week-in-review roundtable panel; joined "The Buck Sexton Show" to discuss the latest in former President Trumps' criminal prosecutions as well as the possible end of much-dreaded "Chevron deference" at the U.S. Supreme Court; joined "Jenna Ellis in the Morning" on American Family Radio to discuss Ron DeSantis bowing out of the GOP primary and why I think all conservatives must now rally to Donald Trump; joined "Always Right Radio with Bob Frantz" on AM 1420 The Answer (Cleveland) to discuss the same topic; was quoted in an article in The Spectator about my argument that former DeSantis voters should now "come home" and support Trump against Joe Biden this November; and joined Mike Slater on "The First" to discuss Tuesday night's New Hampshire primary results and why former South Carolina Gov. and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley seems so set on remaining in the race.

Our additional highlighted right-leaning Newsweek op-eds from the past two weeks include selections from Aviva Klompas, Nicole Russell, Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kans.), Reps. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) and Rick W. Allen (R-Ga.), and Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.).

After Iowa, It's Time for Republicans to Rally to Trump

Donald Trump is going to be the Republican nominee for president. Some rival campaigns may yet persist, and it is of course true that the overwhelming majority of the delegates for this summer's Republican National Convention have yet to be allotted. But after this week's Iowa caucuses, in which the 45th president delivered a crushing blow to both runner-up Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) and third-place finisher former Gov. Nikki Haley (R-S.C.), there can be no serious doubt: The GOP is still Donald Trump's party, and he will be the party's nominee for the third straight presidential election.

I do not arrive at that conclusion lightly. I am a Floridian who moved to the Sunshine State during the COVID-19 pandemic, as so many others did, in no small part due to Gov. DeSantis' exceptional leadership and statesmanship. I am deeply grateful for his stewardship of our great state, which has moved from purple to solid-red under his watch. Accordingly, this column has been supportive of his presidential aspirations, even as his campaign has struggled to gain traction.

But as the Florida legislative session swings into high gear and as the DeSantis campaign grapples with a 30-point blowout in Iowa after betting it all on a highly touted grassroots mobilization effort, the "full Grassley" visiting of all 99 Iowa counties, and endorsements from popular Hawkeye State leaders such as Bob Vander Plaats and Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-Iowa), it is time to face reality.
