When Does NFL Training Camp Begin? Dates and Full Schedule as Teams Gear up for 2019 Season

After a summer basking in the sunshine, NFL players are gearing up for training camp. Several have already attended their respective franchises' mini-camps last month, but for almost all of them, the grind begins in its earnest this week.

While there's no fixed starting date for summer training, all the 32 franchises will have reported by the end of the week.

Per NFL rules, teams can't start training camp with a full roster earlier than 15 days before their first scheduled preseason game or July 15, depending on whichever is later. Rookies and first-year players, meanwhile, are allowed to begin training camp a week before the veterans report.

Thus, it was no surprise to see veterans on the Denver Broncos and the Atlanta Falcons rosters reporting for training last week.

The two teams face each other on Thursday, August 1 in the Hall of Fame Game, the traditional curtain-raiser of the NFL preseason.

The Broncos began a full-roster training camp on July 17, while the Falcons welcomed back their veterans four days later.

On Wednesday, veterans for 13 franchises joined the rookies who had already reported for training.

Meanwhile, the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins opened training camp with rookies and veterans reporting for training on the same day.

The Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Pittsburgh Steelers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans will all open training camp on Thursday.

Rookies on 30 of the 32 franchises have already begun training, with those on the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers rosters being the only exceptions.

That is because the Cowboys' first preseason game isn't until August 10, when they play the 49ers.

Both teams will open camp on Friday, along with the Cincinnati Bengals, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams and the Oakland Raiders.

Rookies for the quartet of teams, however, have already reported for training camp earlier this week.

While the Hall of Fame Game is scheduled for Thursday, the NFL preseason doesn't get into full swing until a week later. Some 16 games are scheduled between August 8 and August 10.

All the 32 franchises will be in action, with the New York Giants kicking off proceedings against the New York Jets, while defending Super Bowl champions the New England Patriots face the Detroit Lions.

The NFL regular season begins three weeks later and the honor of playing in the curtain raiser is bestowed upon two of the league's oldest franchises when the Chicago Bears host the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field on Thursday, September 5 at 8:20 p.m. ET.
