A man dressed as a ninja and armed with a sword left 26 special op military members "hunkered down in a hangar wondering where help is," records have revealed.
The violent attack, which is thought to have wounded at least one person, reportedly took place at Inyokern Airport, in Kern County, California, just after midnight on September 18, according to what appears to be a military incident report shared on social media.
This is corroborated by a Ridgecrest Police Department report. The U.S. military, which Newsweek has approached both for comment, has yet to respond.
Instagram user Daddy SOARbucks posted a screenshot of what is thought to be a military incident report describing an attack.
The slightly redacted report states: "[Staff Sergeant] SSG was sitting outside of the Administration Building of the hanger at Iyokern Airfield smoking a cigarette when an unknown person wearing a full ninja garb to include a katana sword walked up to SSG.
"The person wearing the ninja garb stated: 'Do you know who I am?' SSG replied: 'No.'
"The unknown person then asked: 'Do you know where my family is?' SSG again stated: 'No.'
"At this point the person in ninja garb began to slash at SSG, striking his phone and his knee and leg.

"SSG immediately began running through the parking lot and trying to evade the unknown person.
"SSG jumped the fence and entered the admin building. SSG and CPT [Captain] began locking all the doors and calling 911."

The ninja then began kicking and punching doors and windows.
"Unknown person left and returned a few minutes after with a large block of asphalt which he threw through the windows, striking CPT."
The account of the bizarre brutal attack ends with the as-yet-unidentified attacker leaving before apparently being "arrested elsewhere."
A report made by Ridgecrest Police Department corroborates this account, stating an incident matching the account occurred at 1.19 a.m., "on North Airport Road. Iknyokern Airport – with a sword – male subject in a ninja costume – suspect is on foot in parking lot – at least one victim."
Then a second call arrived approximately half an hour via 911, with the log stating: "26 spec op military members doing training at the airport. "Hunkered down in a hangar wondering where help is."
News of how the special op troops apparently reacted to the "ninja" attack triggered derision and mocking memes on social media.
However, when contacted by Newsweek, user Daddy SOARbucks, a serving member of the military, categorically denied "mocking the soldiers, company or battalion in question."
He said: "I'm merely making light of what was obviously a ridiculous situation these guys went through. It has always been my goal to bring smiles and laughs to my brothers and sisters in arms, and to meme with honesty and integrity, by not only calling out injustice and mistreatment against my fellow Night Stalkers, but also praising accounts of textbook leadership and individual acts of bravery, service and heroism.
"Having said that: hearing first-hand accounts from the troops in California at the time, I think the two soldiers mentioned in the initial report, as well as the rest of the service members present that morning, performed admirably, given their unconventional methods of self-defense and physical security against a true master of both the blade and of ninjutsu."
Instagram user jesse_d_day wrote: "They used the term 'spec op' reallllll loose there."
Staffy_of_marines added: "We need that ninja to be hunting down senior military leaders. 🤣"
And Og_11b commented: "The 26 'spec op military members' couldn't fashion a slingshot and shoot that dork in the face with a rock? Lol."
