A teenager has been killed and multiple other young people injured after shots were reportedly fired into a party bus in East Oakland, California, early this morning.

A 19-year-old woman from Stockton is believed to have been killed, according to the victim's godmother and as reported by NBC Bay Area.

The shooting reportedly occurred on eastbound Interstate 580 between MacArthur Boulevard and Seminary Avenue around 12:23 a.m. local time on Tuesday when up to 30 shots were fired into the vehicle. The bus then exited the freeway and pulled into Eastmont Station.

Parents began arriving at the station to check on their children around 12:40 a.m., East Bay Times reporter Dylan Bouscher tweeted shortly after 1 a.m. PDT.

Several officers could be seen outside Eastmont Station surrounding a bus and shining lights in what appeared to be a shattered window from several bullet holes, in a video shared by the reporter.

Relatives said the partygoers were celebrating a birthday.

"The father of a woman celebrating her 21st birthday on the party bus in East Oakland tonight said his daughter was shot in the leg but is in stable condition," Bouscher said in a tweet. "His other daughter was on the bus when the shooting happened. She is also stable."

Up to six more victims were reportedly taken to hospital with injuries.

Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson told Newsweek that the California Highway Patrol (CHP) was investigating the case.

The CHP told NBC Bay Area that the shooter was inside another vehicle on the freeway and no suspects had been arrested or identified as of Tuesday morning. It remains unclear if the bus was targeted.

Eastbound lanes of the Interstate 580 at MacArthur Boulevard were closed for two hours as investigators surveyed the scene.

The shooting follows a spate of violence in the East Oakland area over the weekend. Two teenage male victims died from gunshot wounds on Sunday night, NBC Bay Area reported, citing Oakland Police.

The shooting was first reported at 5:53 p.m. local time on Sunday in the 2500 block of Highland Avenue in the Highland Terrace neighborhood, according to the police statement cited by the news outlet.

Officers arrived on the scene to find a 17-year-old boy on the ground. They tried to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A short time later, another 17-year-old boy with gunshot wounds was dropped off at nearby Highland Hospital, just blocks from the shooting scene. The second victim also died from his injuries, police said. A man has been detained in the shootings and homicide detectives are said to be investigating the incident.

Newsweek has contacted the East Oakland Police Department and the California Highway Patrol for comment.
