All schools in Jackson Township, Ohio, remain under lockdown on Tuesday after a seventh-grader shot himself inside of Jackson Memorial Middle School, according to Jackson Local Schools.

The student is being treated at a hospital for an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, which occurred after a student brought a weapon to the school. Earlier reports have stated the incident took place in a restroom at the school. The student's condition is unknown.

Police said students and staff are safe, and parents will be notified when to pick up their children from school. Jackson Police Chief Mark Brink tried to reassure parents and local press during a press conference that the department would find more details.

"We've got to look into how that happened and from that put a plan together and make sure we have a presence here especially going forward," Brink said.

The incident comes days after 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz allegedly killed 17 people and injured numerous others at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Cruz was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder on Thursday. Staff and students who attended the high school said Cruz was known to have an obsession with guns; many were not surprised he would try to attack the high school.

Reports came out on Thursday that officials across the U.S. had responded to many reports of guns on school property the day after the school shooting in Florida. There were no injuries in any of the reported cases.

In the United States, students are found with guns at schools at a rate of just over one per day, according to nonprofit gun news site The Trace. Over 150,000 students from 170 primary or secondary schools have gone through a shooting since the massacre at Columbine High School in 1999, according to a Washington Post analysis.
