OnlyFans Memes Flood the Internet After Site Announces Ban on Some Sexual Content

On Thursday, OnlyFans announced that it would ban sexually explicit content starting October 1. People online were shocked since the platform, which has amassed more than 130 million users, is known primarily for its adult-oriented content.

In a statement shared to Twitter by Axios editor Dan Primack, the company said that it will "prohibit the posting of any content containing sexually explicit conduct," as a way to "ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform, and to continue to host an inclusive community to creators and fans ..."

Nudity, however, will still be allowed on the platform, so long as it stays consistent with the platform's "Acceptable Use Policy."

The changes, said the company, are being made at the request of its banking partners and payout providers.

In response to the news, OnlyFans started to trend on Twitter late Thursday afternoon, and netizens flooded the internet with memes about what they believe to be the inevitable downfall of the majorly successful subscription-based platform.

Of course, many took the opportunity to make the obvious joke, that OnlyFans would soon be bought out by a company that sells, well, fans.

"I give porn-free OnlyFans one year before they're bought for $1 by a company that sells ceiling fans," tweeted writer Matt Baume.

Many drew comparisons to popular blogging site Tumblr's ban on pornographic content in 2019. In January 2021, The Independent reported that the site lost one-fifth of its users in response to the ban, which many felt was an attack on "sex-positive, LGBT and NSFW art communities."

Twitter user Matt tweeted: "tumblr and onlyfans hanging out after they both banned porn," along with a photo of two headstones.

In a similar vein, another Twitter user tweeted a popular meme format of two people arm wrestling, saying that the platforms' decision to ban pornographic content meant both had dug their own grave.

Editor Jeffrey Zhang agreed with the sentiment, and posted a photo of two caskets with the caption: "It's the annual Tumblr/OnlyFans meetup."

It's no secret that many users make a living off the platform. So, some users shared memes about those creators now having to find other jobs.

"Only Fans content creators after October 1st," tweeted one user with a video of a person assembling burgers at a fast-food restaurant.

Twitter user @_Tyreeck_shared the infamous clip of Paul Rudd's on "Hot Ones," where he says, "Hey, look at us." When the host asks, him "Who would've thought," Rudd responds: "Not me."

Along with the clip, the user tweeted: "Top 1% OnlyFans creators linking up at Job Centre."

It is unclear what the future will hold for the platform, but it's apparent that many online believe that the new ban on content will cause OnlyFans to fail.
