Fires are continuing to spread in Oregon with residences and other structures suffering damage or destruction and people reported missing or feared dead.

According to Associated Press, dozens of people had been reported missing after a "devastating" blaze in southern Oregon. At least 35 people have been killed by wildfires in California through to Washington.

The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag Warnings for areas across Oregon, though rain and mist is also being forecast throughout this evening.

Newsweek has provided a guide to all fire incidents listed on the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center (NWCC) to help people stay safe.

Almeda Drive

The fire, which is located 4 miles northwest of Ashland, is burning through 3,200 acres of land. According to NWCC, the fire is 60 percent contained after destroying 600 residences and 100 other structures. Over 16,000 residences remain threatened by the fire spread.

Pheonix and Talent still remain under level 3 evacuation orders, while Medford and Central Point are level 1, according to Jackson County's evacuation map.

Archie Creek

This fire is located 20 miles east of Glide and is only 10 percent contained. Burning through 121,370 acres of land, the fires have destroyed 95 residences and two other structures, according to NWCC. Over 1,800 residences are still under threat.

According to the latest update by NWCC, access to the fire areas is limited due to "smoke and blocked roads" and "large tracts of private and federal timber lands" continue to be threatened by the fires. The update also says that electrical transmission lines have been damaged or are threatened.

Any air operations were grounded over the weekend due to thick smoke from the fires, as fire crews, alongside the Oregon Department of Transport, worked to get highway 138 east safe for fire traffic. According to NWCC, the highway is closed to all non-fire traffic between Milepost 17 and the junction with highway 97.

The update states that smoke over Roseburg was forecast to lift from yesterday, which could lead to "increased fire activity" in the area.

Beachie Creek

Located in the Willamette National Forest and Opal Creek Wilderness Area, this fire is currently burning through 188,374 acres, says NWCC. The fire is zero percent contained and threatens nearly 37,000 residences.

This fire, which is located east of Detroit, is 1 mile apart from the Riverside Fire, though the NWCC advises that a merge of the two fires "is not imminent."

"The current combination of winds, record dry forests, and a lack of natural holding features in the Table Rock Wilderness and surrounding areas mean it is still possible the fires could burn together in the coming days," says the update. "Based on current weather, it is anticipated that a future merger would not result in dynamic fire behavior as seen in the last week."

NWCC reports that fire officials, working with the Marion County Sherriff's Office and Oregon State Police, are coordinating recovery efforts along the Santiam Canyon. The update says that 16,776 structures are at level 3 evacuations and another 18,528 homes are in level 2 evacuations.

The weather forecast, as reported by NWCC, suggests that high pressure will slowly weaken today, meaning there could be some improvement in overall air quality. There is also a reported good chance of rain tonight and tomorrow.

Brattain

Burning through 20,000 acres of land, this fire is located 8 miles south of Paisley. This man-made fire is zero percent contained and threatens 50 residences, according to NWCC.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) issued a level 3 evacuation notice for the Brattain Fire. This affects Red House Lane (north of Paisley), South on Highway 31 to Clover Flat Road onto Clover Flat Road to Forest Service Road 3510 (Moss Pass Road), says NWCC. The Red Cross is creating an evacuation area at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Lakeview (1900 North 4th Street).

The safety advice for those in the evacuation area says that people should be prepared for congestion on highway 31.

Echo Mountain Complex

Located 4 miles east of Lincoln City, this fire is burning through 2,435 acres. The cause of the fire is under investigation and is 20 percent contained by firefighter crews. According to NWCC, 100 residences have been destroyed by this fire and a further 4,109 are threatened.

"Much of the fire line has been completed and firefighters will spend the day completing the last sections of line and beginning mop up," NWCC's update says. "There are still resource shortages around the region, as large fires are spreading across the western landscape."

Overnight, weather forecast reports say that rain and mist will begin in the area, helping fire crews to make "progress in mopping up and further securing the primeter of the fire," says NWCC.

In terms of closures, highway 18 remains closed to provide firefighters safe space to operate. Current evacuation orders can be found here.

Grizzly Creek

This man-made fire is currently burning 325 acres of land and is 25 percent contained, says NWCC. Located 16 miles east of Ashland, it is currently threatening 72 residences and 108 other structures, according to the latest situation report. The fire is estimated to be contained by September 15.

Holiday Farm

Located 3 miles west of McKenzie Bridge, this fire is burning through 165,000 acres of land. According to NWCC, the fire is only 5 percent contained and threatens over 23,500 residences.

Yesterday, firefighters began the process of locating people unaccounted for within the fire perimeter, says NWCC. "Teams will start along highway 126 and the nearby communities. If any victims are found, the firefighters will notify the Lane County Sheriff's Office for investigation."

Over the weekend, NWCC reports that the fire grew by around 5,000 acres with the perimeter nearing 200 miles. The organization reports that a "stubborn layer of thick smoke" has hampered air operations but aircraft remain available if conditions improve.

NWCC advises people to be mindful of "road hazards include falling trees and rocks and debris." The latest information on closures can be found here. Current evacuation information is available for Lane County and Linn County.

Lionshead

Located 20 miles west of Warm Springs and west of Detroit, this fire is burning through 146,000 acres of land, says NWCC. According to the latest update, five percent of the fire is contained. NWCC says that nearly 400 buildings are under threat from this fire.

"Heavy smoke will continue to cover the area, although winds aloft should begin to
push smoke dispersement and begin to improve air quality throughout the week," says NWCC. "Temperatures [yesterday] will be cooler at 70 to 75 F and humidity levels will range from 18 to 28 percent.

"Winds will be light and variable, on the fire aligning with terrain causing upslope, updrainage fire activity with group torching and spotting, becoming more active than we have seen the last couple of days," the organization continues.

Roads and trails on the southwest portion of the Warm Springs Reservation are closed to the public as well as in place for Deschutes, Mountain Hood and Willamette National Forests, says NWCC.

North Cascade Complex

This fire, located 1 mile south of Molalla, is burning through 2,060 acres of land and is zero percent contained, according to NWCC. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire behavior is described as "moderate" with NWCC reporting that multiple smaller fires make up the complex and are estimated as:

  • Wlihoit Fire 776 acres.
  • Unger Fire 378 acres.
  • Dowty Creek Fire 890 acres.
  • Graves Creek Fire 45 acres.

P-515

This fire, located west of Warm Spring, is now 95 percent contained. The size of the fire is reported to be 4,609, says NWCC, and was caused by lightning. The estimated containment date was over the weekend.

Riverside

Located 8 miles southeast of Estacada, this fire is burning through 133,799 acres of land. According to NWCC, it is zero percent contained with the cause under investigation.

The current report says that 33 residences have been destroyed by the fire with nearly 171,000 under threat. A further 2,000 other structures are under threat from the fire, says NWCC.

The latest status report says that "favorable weather" has limited the rapid fire growth seen in the early days of the fire, but that conditions remain "extremely dangerous" as active fire remains thousands of acres in and around the fire perimeter.
