Over 30 Percent of Democrats Don't Expect Biden to Run in 2024: Poll

A majority of those who responded to a new poll said they did not believe President Joe Biden will run for president again in 2024.

Fifty-two percent of those polled by The Wall Street Journal said they doubted Biden would seek a second term as president, with just 29 percent saying they think he would. Among those who identified themselves as Democrats, 41 percent said they believe he will run again, 32 percent said they didn't think he would, and 26 percent were unsure.

Biden and the White House have stated his intent to run in 2024, with some reports suggesting Biden will make a final decision on his 2024 candidacy around the midterm elections in November.

Some of the poll's respondents said they believed that if Biden did not run again, it would be because of the impact the presidency could have on someone his age. Biden set a new record as the oldest president ever sworn into office last January at 78 years old, and would be 82 if he runs and wins again in the 2024 election and is inaugurated again in January 2025.

The poll also showed that 49 percent of respondents believe that Trump will stage a third presidential campaign in 2024. More specifically, 60 percent of Republicans said they believe Trump will run again.

While Trump hasn't announced his candidacy, he is the subject of a complaint filed Monday with the Federal Elections Commission by pro-Democratic super-PAC American Bridge that alleges he has violated campaign finance laws by raising and spending large sums of money on events that would advance his 2024 campaign without officially filing to run.

Should Biden and Trump both run in 2024, the poll found the pair tied at 45 percent support each, echoing multiple polls in recent months that have indicated a potential rematch would be a close race.

Biden said in December that he would run for reelection in 2024 if he was still in "good health" and that another election against Trump would "increase the prospect of running." A month later, Biden revealed that Vice President Kamala Harris would be his running mate if he chooses to launch a 2024 bid.

Reelection questions aside, 83 percent of Democrats in the poll said they had a favorable view of Biden. The Democrats identified Harris as a likely candidate to replace Biden on the ticket if he decides not to run, along with other 2020 candidates who could mount another campaign like Pete Buttigieg, Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren or Amy Klobuchar.
