Overwatch 2: How to Get Coins for Free

Like most free-to-play games, Overwatch 2 offers a set of premium currency that players can purchase and then use to unlock items like Legendary Skins and even the game's new Battle Pass. While you can purchase these Coins at any point while playing the game, you'd need to spend around $10 to earn enough Coins to purchase the Battle Pass each season.

Not all players can or want to spend the real money needed to unlock these items. Instead, they'd rather earn Coins for free in Overwatch 2, something that can be done—but it is a bit of a slow grind.

Because Overwatch 2 is free-to-play, Blizzard is relying on the Legendary Skins, emotes, and other items in the game's store to help with the costs of the servers. And that means that players are going to need to purchase or earn Coins if they want to start unlocking things that aren't unlocked when you level up the Battle Pass.

Unfortunately, there's only one real way to earn Coins for free in Overwatch 2, and it's extremely limited. This may change in the future, but for now, here's what you need to know if you want to work your way toward a Legendary Skin.

Coins are earned by completing a set of Weekly Challenges. Upon completing four Weekly Challenges, you'll be rewarded with a total of 30 Coins. You can earn another 20 by completing eight Weekly Challenges, bringing your total up to 50 Coins.

Finally, you can earn an additional 10 Coins by completing 11 Weekly Challenges each week. That means you can earn up to 60 Coins per week, with no other way to earn them.

Based on the cost of Legendary Skins within the game's store, you'll need to play quite a few weeks and complete quite a few Weekly Challenges if you really want to unlock those Legendary Skins, or even be able to purchase the Battle Pass. Luckily, it doesn't appear that unlocking new characters like Sojourn and Junker Queen will be tied to the premium currency. However, that could change in the future.

It's unclear if the way the Coins are set up was purposeful, but it has caused some debate throughout the Overwatch 2 community, as many games with similar free-to-play models offer more ways for you to earn their premium currency. Many other games even reward you with premium currency in the Battle Pass. However, Overwatch 2 does not seem to follow that same model.
